1860 FEDERAL CENSUS HELPS-DOOR COUNTY, WI

The following is an 1860 Federal Census-Door County Wisconsin HELPS document created by Ginny HAEN and contributed to the PGS on 7 Apr 2011. She realized the need for a further explanation for family history researchers for that period of time in the area.
Due to the fact that Door County, Wisconsin, was in a state of formation of its Civil Towns in 1860, family history researchers should realize that the villages they are looking for could very probably be in a different Civil Town on the 1860 Federal Census (see Door County Civil Towns page for more). Also, they should keep in mind that people were coming and going and traveling was difficult. One man took the census in Door County in 1860 over a period of two months. He could easily have missed someone due to miscellaneous reasons. We are thankful though for his work that is a wonderful resource for family history today.

This census does
not contain all the present (Civil) towns as they were not all created by 1860.
The towns of Egg Harbor and Baileys Harbor were both created in July of 1861,
Union was formed in November 1868 and Jacksonport in March 1869. Note: Door
County does not have townships, but towns, so when a town is referred to, it
does not mean the village or city, but the larger area that one would usually
think of as a township.
On the microfilm
are the following page numbers in the order they are on the film, for the
different towns. Notice that some of the towns are split into two parts. There
are two sets of page numbers; the 900 series numbers written at the top of the
pages seem to be in order but the actual page numbers written in the space
provided on the sheets are not in order on the film. The census was done by D.C.
McIntosh, Assistant Marshall in June and July 1860.

Original Images of Census pages: After finding the individual or family on the indexes, it is necessary to view and copy the pages from the original census for your records. Viewing those pages will allow you to see neighbors and possible other family living nearby. Also, street names may be mentioned if in a village or city. The Door County Library in Sturgeon Bay and Brown County Library in Green Bay have censuses up to 1930 available on microfilm. These microfilms can be interloaned to other public libraries. You can also view microfilms of the Federal Censuses at your local Family History Center.
