Edward Moritz Laessig was
born in Gera, Thuringen, a Duchy of Saxony, Germany on the
(fifteenth) 15 of July in the year 1835.
His father was Johann Heinrich Laessig, born 17 Feb 1794 and died 01 May 1846, both events occurring in Gera. Edward's
mother was Eleonore Regina Boehme, born 07 Aug 1794, in Liebschwitz, Thuringen, Germany, and died 27 Jun 1854 at Gera. Johann
Heinrich Laessig and Elenore Regina Boehme were married 16 Feb 1817 at Liebschwitz, Thuringen, Germany.

x. EDWARD
MORITZ LAESSIG, Sr. b. 15 Jul 1835, Gera, Thuringen, Germany; d. 10 Apil 1915 at Stratford,
Marathon Co., Wisconsin, USA.
Edward Moritz Laessig, Sr.
for whom this biography was written, is the patriarch of our central Wisconsin
USA Laessig clan. Records all state
"Saxony" as his birthplace, and it is now known that
he was born in the city of Gera,
in one of the Duchies of Saxony, now known as Thuringen, Germany. The Chicago, Cook County, Illinois census record of 1860 records stated that he came
to America in 1855. This record has been proven to be
accurate. Edward came to America with his brother, Robert, born 29 April 1831. The ship’s manifest records state that the
two young men, "Eduard Lessig age 21" and "Robert Lessig
age 24" sailed from Bremen to New York on the ship "Orpheus"
arriving in the USA 1 September 1855. The two young men departed their homeland
after the death of their mother, Eleonore Regina Boehme Laessig which occurred 27 June 1854 at Gera. Their father, Johann Heinrich Laessig had passed
away years earlier, on 1 May 1846 also at Gera. They left behind many brothers and sisters, nieces,
nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins to come to a new world and establish life in the pioneering United States of America. Robert
made his home in St.
Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. Perhaps a
relative had come to that location earlier and persuaded him to settle
there. Many other Laessigs are known to
have lived there.
Edward settled in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His naturalization
papers have never been located, and were probably destroyed
in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. According to family, it was in
Chicago that Ed met Jeanette Maria Huberta Baenen, born 6 January 1836, an immigrant from s'Hertogenbosch, Holland. Her parents were Francis J.J. Baenen b. 15 Oct. 1806 - d. 14 Nov. 1887 and Clara Vande Vaart b. 28 Sept. 1803 - d. 24 Jan.1851. Jeanette immigrated with her
father, step-mother, Cornelia "Kate" (Van Grunderbeek) and siblings. Jeanette
remained in Chicago and married Edward in the year
1856 or 57, and her family
moved to the town of Scott, Brown County,
Wisconsin, to a small village known as Bay Settlement, near Green Bay, Wisconsin. Francis
"Frank" Sr. and "Kate" Baenen later moved on with some of
their children to Jamestown, North
Dakota,
leaving their son Frank Baenen Jr. at Bay Settlement on their original farm.
Ed and Jeanette's first
child, Edward Moritz Laessig, Jr. was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin on 10 March 1858. Jeanette evidently went to be with her family for
the birth of her first child. Their next three children: Mary, Henry and
Augusta, were born in Chicago.
A family story that was handed down told how Jeanette would smuggle each baby
out of the house to be baptized Catholic a few weeks after it was born, without
Ed's knowledge. He was Lutheran and did not want the children baptized
Catholic, however records at a little church located near their home in Chicago was once a German Catholic Church, and verify the
family lore. At several weeks of age, each baby was baptized. The closest
Catholic Church would have been St. Francis of Assisi which was a German parish founded in 1853. The
parish was located at Roosevelt Road (1200 South) and Newberry Avenue. The parish was merged with Holy Family Parish in
1994 and renamed Holy Family-St. Francis of Assisi.
According to the book
"Location of Chicago Roman Catholic Churches,
1850-1990" Second
Edition by Jack Bochar the records of St. Francis of Assisi are at the
Archdiocese of Chicago's Archives & Records Center.
The family lived between
sets of railroad tracks, and it is believed that
is why their location was
sometimes overlooked for census taking. The
address was 81 West Liberty Street. It is described as the `north side of West
Liberty, between South Canal and South Jefferson' and 'N.B. Mitchell is the
street one block south of Liberty', in a Chicago city directory of 1860-1861.
That address was changed in 1909, and for a time would be 550 W. Liberty Street. The directory also stated that Edward worked at
J.C.W. Bailey & Co. as a laborer 1865 - 1866 edition. At some point, Liberty Street was changed to Barber Street. 550 West Liberty
(Barber) Street currently would be near the Dan Ryan Expressway at about 1400
South. Their home was very near the famed "Maxwell Street" of Chicago where open markets were the tradition for many
years.
Birth records indicate
that the family relocated to Green Bay, Wisconsin by the year 1867 when daughter Francisca Philomena
"Minnie" was born. Cornelia, Fred, Frank and Charles were likewise
born in that area. Son Louis, "Stoner", daughters Julia and Anna were
later born in Marathon
County, Wisconsin where the family relocated to Wausau for a number of years, then to Webertown, a small
settlement on the Big Eau Pleine River, on the north side of the river. A sawmill, Catholic Church, store,
post office and homes were located on the south side of the river.
Edward and Jeanette's
family consisted of the following:
Edward M. Laessig born 10
March 1858 married 6 April, 1884 to Amelia Frick born 30 Nov. 1865, daughter of
Frederick Frick and Augusta "Pauline" Anna Benewitz.
Mary Laessig born 5 July 1859 married 27 July 1884 to Emil R. Ruder, son of George and Louisa Schmidt
Ruder of the Ruder Brewery in Wausau.
Henry F. Laessig born 3 March 1863 married 7 Jan. 1888 to Agatha
"Yette" Wagner, born 7 Dec. 1863, daughter of Michael and Susanna Fischbach
Wagner of Manitowoc, WI.
Augusta "Gustie" Laessig born 23 Jan. 1865
married 29 Aug 1884 to Michael B. Wagner born 11 Dec. 1860, son of Michael and
Susanna Fischbach Wagner.
Fred Laessig born 24 June
1870 married in 1894 to Olga Polege born 19 July 1875, daughter of Julius
and Louise Usadel Polege.
Charles (or Carl) Laessig
born 28 April 1876
married 28 Nov. 1896 to
Jeanette McDonald born 23 June 1876, daughter of Frank and Cass (Mac Donald)
McDonald.
Francisca Philomena
"Minnie" Laessig born 15 May 1867 married *Henry Weber born in 1860, son of Michael
and Elisabeth Kaiser Weber.
Louis "Stoner"
Laessig born 2 April 1877, remained unmarried.
Julia Laessig born 24
March 1879 married 26 June 1900 to Daniel Vandehey born 29 Dec. 1874, son of
Herman and Mary Curtain Vandehey of Hollandtown, WI.
Anna Laessig born 16 March 1881 married 19 Sept 1905 to John D. Kissinger born 14 Feb. 1882, son of
Jacob and Elizabeth Harth Kissinger of Wisconsin Rapids, Wood County, WI.
Cornelia Huberta
"Nellie" Laessig born 22 July 1869 - died 2 Nov. 1870, age 15 months.
Francis Hubert"
Frank" Laessig born 30 March 1873 married Mary K. Sawyer born 22 Oct. 1873, daughter
of Joseph and Ellen Thomson Sawyer. She
died 13 Aug. 1907. Frank then married Mary Weber on 29 September
1909. Mary Weber was
born 21 March 1887,
daughter of Christian and Anna Kaiser Weber.
*Henry Weber, husband of
Minnie Laessig, was the son of Michael Weber and Elizabeth Kaiser Weber.
Henry's brother Christian Weber was the founder of Webertown Settlement.
Christian Weber and his wife Anna Kaiser Weber, daughter of Andreas Kaiser and
Magdalena Esslinger Kaiser, were the parents of Mary Weber Laessig.
On September 13,
1884, the township of Brighton in Marathon County was divided in two. The new township that was formed was Eau Pleine,
named after the big Eau Pleine River that flows through the township and Webertown Settlement. In the
spring of 1885, Edward Moritz Laessig,
Sr. was elected the first chairman of the town of Eau Pleine.
Edward was also
responsible, at least in part, for the establishment and building of the first Lutheran Church, St.
Paul’s, just
east of where he made his home. Although the church building no longer
remains standing, a small cemetery, maintained by the Lutheran Church in Stratford, remains. It is located about a mile and a half
north of the village of Stratford.
Edward Laessig worked as a
stone mason and laborer for much of his life, and he farmed after moving to Marathon County. He remained in that location for the remainder of his life, passing away
on 10 April 1915. He
was laid to rest in the Webertown cemetery maintained as the Eau Pleine Cemetery by St. Joseph's Catholic Church. As a final choice, Edward
converted on his deathbed. Jeanette lived until 13 May 1924. She is buried beside her husband.
Edward Laessig, and his
brother Robert, followed very different lifestyles once they came to America. Robert
worked as a carpenter, Edward a laborer.
Robert fought in the Civil War with the Union, and earned a meager pension for his efforts. It was through Robert's
enlistment records that the place of and Edward's birth was located after 40+
years of searching. The war left Robert
disabled and barely able to eek out a living working part time. He married several times and had four known
children with his last wife, Mathilda Starch. They were:
I. Marie Theresia Laessig born 4 April 1880.
II. Max Robert Laessig born 17 June 1883.
III. Matilda Laessig born 15 January 1887.
IV. Lillie Laessig born 2
February 1890.
Other of Robert's wives
include:
1. Annie
Russell (this is verified in his Civil War records)
2. Annie Osberg (this is also verified in his Civil War records)
3. Anna Laessig (this could be another marriage of this Robert)
4. Anna Bauer (this also could be another marriage of this Robert)
5. Mathilda Starch (this is verified in Civil War records)
Ancestry.com listed St. Louis, MO marriages of 1804-1876. A Heidenreich
Reinhold married an Anna Schumann on 21 Oct. 1861 volume/page 10/460.
Could this possibly have been the Mrs. Anna Reinhold that married Robert
Laessig 4 Dec 1864 in St. Louis, Volume 11, page 459. According to the records given me by
Karen Eddy, a cousin, she was Annie Osburg, Osburg being her maiden name.
Robert married again on 16 June 1873 Volume 16 page 020, this time to Anna
Laessig. That was the maiden name given. No other information
regarding this marriage has been found.
Robert Laessig married Anna Bauer on November 24, 1878 at St. Louis, MO. Mrs. Sompt/Sammt was given as her
"other" name, perhaps a previous marriage. Also Annie Osberg
was given as one of the women he married. These were from the records of the
LDS church researched by Karen Eddy, a cousin on my Kelnhofer side. LDS Film
#528180-p201. There was a Sophia Bauer born April 1843 living in St. Louis in the Census of 1900 E.D. 408, p.2B &
3A.
The first two wives were verified in
Robert's Civil War papers. It is not known if children were born to these
earlier unions... It is totally possible. There are many Laessigs of
unknown parentage listed in records in and around St. Louis Missouri that may indeed be descendants of our dear Robert
and one of his wives.
A Peter Laessig of St.
Louis married
an Emily Laux of St.
Louis on December 26,
1875. Fr. Ch. S. Stark
of the Evangelical Church preformed the ceremony. Unknown if this is a son of Robert from
an earlier marriage, but it is possible. A Peter Laessig was born in Germany in January of 1835. On the 1900 Census he
lived in St.
Louis City, Count of St. Louis, MO. E.D. 408, p. 3B line
92. It says he was married in 1858, his wife's name was Elizabeth. She immigrated in 1852 and he in 1852
also. I don't know if both of these Peter Laessigs are the same men.
Obviously there are two different women and marriages.
In the LDS files, Robert & Anna Laessig are listed in 1873, also an Arthur
E. Laessig. Batch 515699 / call#0528180. Arthur E. Laessig was
married on 23 Nov. 1892 to Mae Johnson in St. Louis, MO.
In the 1870 Census there is a John H. Laessig in St. Louis.
There is also an Augusta Laesing (an often misspelling in the old
records). She was married 24 June 1884 to Albert H. Bierman in St. Louis, St. Louis Co.,
MO. Batch #515706 Dates 188401885 Source Call No. 0529032
Hugo Laessig, born in Saxony in 1852 is listed in the 1880 Census of St. Louis,
MO living in E.D. 1, in right corner 317B, city of St. Louis.
It would appear that there are several families represented in St. Louis, and unclear if they are all from the same family
lines and related, or from separate ancestry altogether.
Children
of ROBERT LAESSIG and MATHILDA STARCH are:
i. MARIE
THERESIA6 LAESSIG, b. 04 Apr 1880, St. Louis, MO; m. CHARLES NOLLER,
1900, St. Louis, MO; b. Apr 1877, Missouri.
Notes for MARIE THERESIA LAESSIG:
Her name
is listed as Mary T Noller in 1900 census.
Notes for CHARLES NOLLER:
Charles
Noller was born in MO or IL. Some reports show MO and some show IL.
Maybe have been born in East St. Louis, IL. He was an orphan. In
1880, at age 3, he was in an orphanage in St. Louis, MO. Records indicate that he
was a woodworker at a arriage factory. He married Mary Laessig in
1899. The census records shows that Mary was born in Wisconsin about 1879. Perhaps her
parents at that time were in Wisconsin??? Maybe they were visiting her
uncle and aunt, Edward & Jeanette Laessig? Some of the above
information was gathered by Pat Michael... who is a shirt-tail cousin... sort

ANTHONY TWAMLEY; b. 1881, New York; d. 1957, Missouri.
Notes for MATILDA LAESSIG:
In the 1910 Census in St. Louis, MO. 22nd ward it states that Mathilda
Laessig, age 23, Single, sister in law to Charles NOLLER (who was married to
Marie/Mary Laessig) was a seamstress of neckwear.
----
Since I
had the death date of October 8, 1970 in Vallejo, CA listed for Mathilda, I
wrote to the John F. Kennedy Library at 505 Santa Clara St., Vallejo, CA 94590,
and Pat Seguerre, a Library Associate in the Adult Services Department wrote
back on February 17, 2005: She Stated: This is to inform you that
we were unsuccessful in locating an obituary for Mathilda Laessig Twamley, DOD
October 8, 1970 in our local microfilm archives of the Vallejo
Times-Herald. Sincerely.... and so it is for a genealogist ... ever in search
of the elusive tid-bit of information that will fill in the
"blanks". The search will continue.......
iv. LILLIE
LAESSIG, b. 02 Feb 1890.
Notes for LILLIE LAESSIG:
I have not
been able to locate for certain, where Lillie Laessig lived out her life.
I did find her in the 1900 Census in St. Louis, MO. Her name in the record was
typed as Gillie, but in looking at the actual census writing, it looks more
like a "T" or an "L" and she was at the St. John's
Infirmary, which I believe was an orphanage, at the SE Cor. Morgan & 2nd
St. in the 15-WD of St. Louis, MO. Oddly, it has "Cana" indicated as her
birthplace.
In all of
the census records throughout the United States I can only find one Lillian
Laessig in the 1920 census in the 9-WD in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan.
There it states: Laessig, Lillian, Lodger, age 29, birthplace typed as Michigan, but in view the written record
of the original census, it appears moreso as "Missouri." At the same address
is Steinman, John, lodger, 17. Both are lodgers at the home of Coulter,
William, head, 31 birthplace Canada, and his wife Irene, 27,
birthplace Indiana.
Our Lillie Laessig was born 02 Feb.
1890,
according to her father Robert in his Civil War records. This Lillie
Laessig living in Michigan in 1920 was born in 1891.
Perhaps eventually I will locate further records to see if and where this
Lillie married and trace her descendants if there are any.
Robert Laessig died on September 1,
1902 and was buried in
Holy Ghost Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.
Unfortunately that cemetery was located in an area that was needed for
highway construction and the bodies were removed to another location.
Research on the remaining
brothers and sisters of Edward Moritz and Robert Laessig has only just begun.
