Lafayette County was named for the Marquis de Lafayette, a French General who helped General George Washington during the American Revolution. It was formed from Iowa County in Wisconsin Territory in 1847, before Wisconsin became a state. It is surrounded by Grant County, Wisconsin, Iowa County, Wisconsin, Green County, Wisconsin, Stephenson County, Illinois and Jo Daviess County, Illinois.
