I am searching for my great-grandfather, who immigrated from Norway
to LaCrosse in the late 1870's or early 1880's. His
name is Anders GAARDER (GORDER). Have also spelled the
name "Gaarder", "Gorder", and "Garder." He was born in 1820.
His wife Berte, died in 1898 in Minnesota, but we are certain that Anders
died in 1895 or earlier.
I can't find anything at all about Anders GAARDER. I have
learned that his son, Peter GAARDER was still living in LaCrosse in 1936.
I contacted some Gaarders near LaCrosse - no relationship.
Have contacted Norway- where I did get his birth & marriage dates,
etc. The only thing we do know is that Anders immigrated from
Norway to LaCrosse, Wisconsin. His wife and two daughters came
in 1877. We don't know when the other children came except
for my grandma, who came in 1885. We believe Anders died in
1895 or earlier because his wife (Berte) was living with my grandmother
in 1895, according to the census - Anders was not mentioned.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I have just returned from a family reunion in the Midwest -
we are researching the SAUGSTAD and THOMPSON (descendants
from Trygvie (Thomas) ANDERSON HJEMLIE who immigrated from the Brumendahl
area of Norway in the 1800's. The fourth brothers named SAUGSTAD
also came from Norway about the same time - approximately 1861. All came
to LaCrosse County and from there went on to Iowa and South Dakota, coming
back to LaCrosse. It seems apparent that there must have been a community
of some kind in LaCrosse County who had come from the same area in Norway
- the Ringsaker Church parishes - both Veldre and Ringsaker.
Do you have any history on the Norwegians who came to LaCrosse County
at that time. One of the brothers remained in Wisconsin - in the Milwaukee
area (West Allis). We are very anxious to determine what the magnet was
that drew these families to LaCrosse County. I would like to know if there
is any history of this time that would be helpful to me - and where I might
find it. Thank you for your assistance.

Hello! I am a La Crosse native, graduate of Central High, class of
1947. I attended the 30th reunion of my class and was given a brick from
the old high school which had been torn down! I am doing some roots genealogy
digging, which is difficult for me as I have no relatives living in La
Crosse anymore.
The person I am interested in is Donald GORDON. His father's
name was George GORDON, an attorney. Donald, I believe, was also an attorney
and a graduate of Cornell U. Law School. I found the family in the 1920
census records at the National Archives branch in New York. As of January,
1920, George GORDON was 58, Donald was 16, and mother's name was Stella.
Father was listed as lawyer, general practice. I believe Donald was in
father's law firm around 1929-1930 and there may have been a partner, Stanley
LOWE or LAW.
Anything at all you could find on Donald GORDON would be greatly appreciated.

They lived in La Crosse between 1860-75. They had some of their
children there and moved on from there. Looking to see if someone else

I have been trying to find any information on the parents of my great
grandparents. My grandfather, Ralph Russell PARCE, born 6/27/1899
in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, married Florence DANSBERRY born 8/15/1900,
believed to be also born in LaCrosse.
Brothers and sisters of Florence DANSBERRY were Earl, born after 1903,
Milton, born 11/11/1903, Vera, born 9/14/1906, and Ida, born 7/6/1910.
Their parents were Walter DANSBERRY, born abt 1882, and Antoinette NELSON,
born abt 1880. Would really love to hear from anyone who has information
on the DANSBERRY surname. From information from my father, Walter was one
of 13 children born to his parents, but I only know of his name and possibly
an additional sister, Ora DANSBERRY, born 10/21/1883. It is believed that
Antoinette NELSON's line came from Norway, and that her parents settled
in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. I have received information that her parents may
be Nels NELSON, born 8/19/1846, in Norway, and Martha OLSON, born
abt 1848, believed to be in Oslo, Norway. They married 10/29/1869, in LaCrosse,
Wisc. If anyone has any information on these families, please get in touch
with me. I am at a loss as to where the family is hiding.

I'd like to know if anyone is familiar with the Jackson Street area
of LaCrosse and what it would have been like in the 1910s and 20's.
My Maternal Gmother apparently lived there and there are conflicting family
stories as to what kind of life her family was leading. I am
assuming it wasn't a particularly wealthy neighborhood, but also was it
ethnically and religiously diverse? Apparently this lady was
Irish on one side and Jewish on the other. I find that odd
for the early 1900s.
