In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
In June 1996, as the Kentucky Project was coming to completion, it was decided to expand
the project to include all states. Volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the
collection of county pages for each state page.
Just 2 weeks or so after the beginning of the USGenWeb project, a group of people decided
to include countries in the project. The project was begun, and there are now several other
countries involved in the project. However, volunteers are still needed for many other countries.
In July 1996, the state of Wisconsin was included as part of this project. Any one interested in hosting a county page which entails the collection of databases and generally overseeing the contents of the web page should look at the County Page Index on the Wisconsin GenWeb Page.
