The Women's Relief Corp. held their first meeting on December 5, 1894. They collected initiation fees of $1.40 from nineteen women and purchased a charter for $5.00. From the time of that first meeting until 1907, the Women's Relief Corp. initiated one hundred and seven women. Most of them lived in Caledonia or in neighboring townships.
The women met each month and engaged in activities to aid soldiers' families and promote patriotism. They had periodic fund rasiers, held frequent suppers for the soldiers and contributed to the comfort and welfare of needy soldiers or their widows.
We are printing the list of women hoping that it may help you identify a Civil War veteran and lead to further genealogical records. Veterans are identified in the 1890 Federal census and in the 1865 Minnesota census. The Houston County Historical Society has some lists of veterans, some applications for GAR and three history books which identify veterans. Many are buried in Houston County cemeteries.
It is possible women may be listed under a maiden and a married name. Ex: Lucy Pope became Lucy Wheaton.
