La Crosse Area Genealogical Society
September 21, 2004
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm on May 25, 2004, by President Terry Micks.
Officer Reports
Secretary Greg Filbeck read the minutes of the May 25, 2004 meeting. The minutes were approved as read.
Treasurer Allen Nelson presented the Treasurer’s Report. The beginning balance on hand as of May 25, 2004 was $1,220.30 with receipts of $326.75 and disbursements of $418.32, leaving a balance on hand as of September 21, 2004 of $1,128.73. The treasurer’s report was filed.
Greg Filbeck reported the following correspondence:
- Wisconsin State Genealogy Society (WSGS) will be hosting a fall workshop on the topic of "Genealogy on the Net and Beyond" at Fitchburg Community College on October 15, 2004.
- WSGS will host a workshop featuring James L. Hanson on the topic "Breathe New Life into Your Research" at the Allient Energy Center in Madison on October 16, 2004.
- The French Canadian/Acadian Genealogy Society of Wisconsin is now meeting on a quarterly basis in Milwaukee.
Committee Reports
Archives
Anita Doering reported the following:
- Cemetery Committee: Jane is almost finished with Mormon Coulee Memorial Park recording. Eagle Scott Joshua Pothof talked to Anita about cemetery recording in the county; he was going to do the paperwork next; hopefully he will start on Woodlawn North and/or Gates of Heaven on Highway B in the town of Medary (both owned by the Diocese). Information about Asbury in Brice Prairie and Houser in Onalaska cemeteries was updated this summer.
- Library News: The Public Library and UW-L Murphy Library have launched a new website called La Crosse History Unbound. It has images of digitized books and other historical information about La Crosse and the county (www.lacrosshistory.org). Examples of digitized material include La Crosse City Directors for 1870, 1880, and 1890; the La Crosse County history of 1881; and Bob Wingate’s Settlement Patterns of La Crosse County. In honor of Archives Week, Margaret Larson will be speaking Thursday, October 21st, at 7pm in the public library auditorium about Women in La Crosse and the Right to Vote. Ethnic treats will be served.

Submissions should be sent to Sue Page at [email protected]. The next Quarterly will be distributed November. The deadline for submissions is mid-October.
Newsletter
Submissions should be sent to Terry Micks at [email protected]. Please identify LAGS in subject line. The next issue will be distributed in January. Submissions are needed by the November meeting.
Programs
Susan Douglas reported the upcoming programs for our society:
October 26 – Naming Patterns
November 23 – Ethnic Treat Night; Don Melby will speak on his research breakthrough in Norway.
January 25 – Luxembourg
Website
Roxanne Munns reporting that our website now includes indexed Quarterlys until two years ago. She welcomes feedback regarding the postings of resources and links at our website: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~wilacgs/. We have received over 5,000 hits to our website.
Unfinished Business
Anita Doering recommended the following purchases for the Naomi Roy Holmlund Memorial Gift Funds ($345):
- Reference and Guide Book for the Genealogist/Armand R. Letourneau
- Dictionnaire national des Canadiens Francais 1608-1760/Drouin series
- Pre-1907 Wisconsin Marriage Indexes for the following locations: Price, Rusk, Sawyer, Taylor, Vilas, Washburn, Richland, Shawano, Waukesha, and Wood
Shirley Schoenfeld moved to accept Anita Doering’s recommendation for purchases. The motion carried.
Program
Janet and Ralph Hendersin spoke on the topic of "Restoration of Old Cemeteries."
Announcements
- Ruth Lamke volunteered to coordinate refreshments for the October meeting.
- Anita Doering will investigate the possibility of obtaining cabinet space for our refreshment supplies.
- Two volunteers will be needed for the Nominating Committee. The Committee will be selecting candidates for the office of Vice-President and Treasurer and will report at the January meeting.
- Non-members are encouraged to join our organization to enjoy the full membership benefits and allow us to continue to provide the same level of programming and services.
