La Crosse Area Genealogical Society

October 24, 2006

 

Call to Order

 

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm on October 24, 2006, by President Terry Micks.

 

Officer Reports

Vice-President Anita Doering read the minutes of the Sept. 26, 2006 meeting. A motion was made to accept the Secretary�s report as corrected that Roxanne Munns reported additions of May and August 2004 indexes to the Quarterlies had been added to the website, not the actual Quarterlies. The motion was approved.

 

Treasurer Allen Nelson read the Treasurer�s Report. The beginning balance on hand as of Sept. 26, 2006 was $1298.16 with receipts of $23.25 and disbursements of $135.00, leaving a balance on hand as of October 24, 2006 of $1186.41.

 

Correspondence

The Wisconsin Historical Foundation sent a thank you for the $50 the Society sent for the genealogy fund in honor of Wisconsin Historical Society staff Lori Bessler�s presentation.

 

Gene-A-Rama will be held April 13-14 at Oconomowoc, Wis. The featured speaker will be Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak.

 

Committee Reports

Archives

The Sons of Norway donated the translated version of �History of the Norwegian Settlements� to the main circulating collection of the La Crosse Public Library. The Archives already has a copy.

 

Newsletter

January will be the next time the newsletter comes out. Send information to Terry by December at [email protected]. Make sure to put LAGS in the subject line.

 

Quarterly

The Quarterly will come out next month, so send any articles and other submissions to Jonna Peterson by next week. This Quarterly will include the survey to the membership that Terry is designing. When you travel and do genealogy research, consider writing an article for the Quarterly about your experiences.

Programs

Tonight is working on problems roundtable discussion

Nov. 28, 2006: Ethnic Holiday Treat Night; Fred Besler, a Civil War re-enactor from Co. B will be here; bring a treat!!

Ideas for 2007 include March or April Anita Lee Palmquist on German Genealogy; Deb Nelson Gourley on her Norwegian books she�s written; digital photography and other technology helpful to genealogists. The name of a WTC instructor John �Jack� Socha was mentioned as he teaches this.

Unfinished Business

Discussion continues about offering a beginner�s workshop

How to Get Started booklet � Roxanne Munns will help Jane Radloff with this

Jane Radloff will investigate at the County building for Saul Arkwright�s letter request from last month

 

New Business

Elections � the nominating committee was created last month. Up for election are: Vice president (2 year term); Treasurer (2 year term); and Secretary (1 year to fill out the term). The current vice president will do secretarial duties until the February meeting. The secretary keeps the membership list updated, takes minutes during the meeting and sends emails to members as necessary.

Treats for January � Connie Erickson & Joyce Krueger will do this.

La Crosse Public Library Periodicals � A request from the La Crosse Public Library for two periodical titles was presented:

$28.95 Everton�s Genealogical Helper

$35.00 Ohio: Cross Roads of our Nation

For a total of $63.95. A motion was made to give the Library $63.95 for this purpose and to have Anita Doering come with some sample issues of other genealogy magazines at the next meeting for the circulating collection. The motion was approved.

A book titled �St. Mary�s Ridge Heritage� is coming out in June 2007 and orders are due by Jan. 31. A motion was made to buy a copy for the Archives Room. The motion carried.

Publicity � Karen Kesselring has agreed to take over publicity.

Email � Remember to let Terry know if you did not receive an email message today reminding you about the meeting tonight. If you didn�t, Terry will add you to her email distribution list.

 

Program

A roundtable discussion was held on encountering and overcoming brick walls in genealogical research.

 

Adjournment

The business portion of the meeting adjourned at 7:42 pm and Cindy Herlitzke provided treats.
