Programs

Informal discussion about program ideas ensued, including a January/February beginners workshop; schools/scout badge help, mentor/buddy system, land records, wills, probates, and LDS.

April 24, 2007: We will meet at the La Crosse County Register of Deeds Office. Terry has asked Cheryl McBride, the new Registrar, to give us an overview of birth, death and marriage records and then focus on land records. Because the building is locked after 5:30, try to park on the 6th Street side of the Courthouse and dont get there before 6:50. Ms. McBride will come down and let us in the building at that time.

May 22, 2007: Cemetery work in Campbell Cemetery from 4-8 pm. Meet at the cemetery. There is an incline and we will not be able to drive into the cemetery. We will take digital photos of tombstones and can clean some stones (bring big containers of water if you can and/or your digital cameras Anita has all the other tools for cleaning).

Website

Comments to the National Archives & Records Administration are due by April 27 regarding the proposed fee increases. Check the website for more details.

The February 2005 Quarterly index was added to the website. Roxanne is working on adding transcribed biographies from the 1881 La Crosse County history to the site.

Unfinished Business

Carol Wittenberg offered to bring treats to the April meeting, but there will not be a business meeting since we are meeting at the Courthouse, so she is off the hook.

Dues are due; Anita will be sending those who have not renewed a reminder letter.

The executive committee is still investigating whether it is cheaper to publish four quarterlies and no newsletter or if this is actually more costly since we wouldnt meet the 200 mailing minimum for bulk mail. The committee is also looking at dues restructuring and changing the order of the meeting based on comments from the membership survey.

Keep an eye on the website for the password to Lost Cousins which will be good until July 4.

New Business

The Wisconsin State Genealogical Society is sponsoring a bus to Wayne for $110 for the FGS Conference in August. It would leave on August 14th and return on the 19th. It will begin in Wausau picking up people along Hwy 39 to Madison and from Madison to Chicago and then Fort Wayne. WSGS will try to set up some parking areas along the route for people coming to that route from other parts of the state. Click here for further details.

Program

Anita Lee Palmquist gave a talk about German genealogy.

Adjournment

The business portion of the meeting adjourned at 7:54 pm and Bessie Richardson provided treats.

Respectfully submitted,

Anita Taylor Doering

Vice-President
