part as: Case of Dwight Utter
No 537.528 at Elroy, Juneau Co., WI before a special examiner for the Bureau
of Pensions states that Dwight Utter is the Claimant. Dwight is age 56 and
his PO address is Elroy, Wiand his occupation is a farmer, when I work. Dwight
lives on a farm but is a pensioner at the rate of $12.00 per month under
the act of June 27, 1890. I am the identical Dwight Utter who claims pension
under the general law of 1862, on account of injury to back and hear disease
and rheumatism recieved during my militarty service., and when served in
Co B W. Wisconsin infantry, Artiller from my enlistment September 4, 1863
until my discharge in October 1865 although my muster out was dated August
30, 1965. I do not claim pension for any other disability. I do not know
that I had any other disabiltiy in the US service. I served as a private
through out my entire service and never had any other service, naval or
military. I enlisted
in Milwaukee, WI September 4, 1863. Before my service time I was emplyed
as a farm laborer from the age of 8 until 15 years when I enlistd. I worked
for Wm Murohy and James Fenis (or Phares) from 1860 until Feb. 1863 at or
about 13 miles south of Brookfield, Sauk Co., WI; for Albert Stalker, 1 mile
north of Mauston, Juneau Co., WI from FEb 1863 and for my grandfather David
Utter, in Elkhorn, Walworth Co., WI from Jne 1863 to October 1863. Prior
to enlistment, I had never been sick to my present knowledge. I had never
been treated by a physcian and never made the acquanitance of an physician
tha tI can remember. When I enlisted, I was sound in body and limb and was
quite large and strong for a boy of 15 years of age. George Clark, Elroy,
Roy Button, Elkhorn, WI----. That is the end of that deposition that I have.
In another depositon dated July 12, 1904 Dwight
Utter dates the following: " Ever since the years of my dischare I have resided in
Juneau Co., WI near Mauston and Elroy postoffices, on farms, but from the
fall of 1865 until Jan 1, 1, 1866, I stayed at Elkhorn, Wi at the house ofmy
grandfather, David Utter. Then he states who treated him for his illness
. Then states that his wife Julia Utter would know of his physical conditon
since our marriage in 1867 and my brother David D. Utter, 3 miles north of
Mauston, WI and my sister Mr.s William Pierce of
Mauston. He goes on to state that he married Julia
Newkirk at Mauston, Juneau Co., WI by a ceremony performed March 25, 1867
by the Justice of the Peace, Nicholas Natz. We have a marriage
certificate. He states that neither of them had been previously married.
that was the end of that depositon even though there are many more pages.
In 1905 census,WI state, Juneau Co., Plumouth

follows: A letter writen for
him by the Citizens Bank in Elroy, WI to Washington DC states and is signed
by Dwight Utter and dated November 11, 1913-"Replying to the enclosed letter
will ay that some time in the early 50's we moved from Brookfield, WI to
a farm near Janesville and in about the year 1959, (which should read 1859)
we moved from Elkhorn, Walworth Co., WI and it was from this latter place
that I went when I enlisted in the US Army. My Grandmother's name with whom
I lived during my minority, was Betsey Ann Cave. Signed by Dwight Utter in
his hand writting. Then follows
a letter dated January 14, 1914 from the Department of Commerce, Washington
the following:
"Sir: Referring to letter
of November 18, 1913, "Civil war Division, Inv. Ctf. 537.528, Dwight Utter,

single. Most of the rest of the census is unreadable. They live by Olive
McCallum family, which is a daughter of Dwight Utter.
Dwight Utter's obituary states that he was
born in Brookfield, WI June 1848 etc.
During the civil war he enlisted as private in Capt. Hyde's Company
B, 1st Regiment of Wisconsin Heavy Artillery September 4, 1863. He was honorably
discharged in Lexington, KY, August 13, 1865. On March 25, 1867 Mr. Utter
was married in the town of Lemonweir to Juia Ett Newkirk. The union was blessed
with three sons and two daughters. One of his children, Willis D. Utter,
preceded him in death 6 years ago.
Beside his own family that he left to mourn
his death the obit says he had a 1/2 brother who lived in Barron, WI. That
half brother would be Edward Stalker who was from the marriage of Dwight's
mother and her second husband, Albert Stalker.
The Mauston Star-Mauston, Juneau Co., Wi had the following death notice on Dwight Utter. In part it stated that Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ingalls and Mr and Mrs. Earl Peckham attended the funeral of Dwight Utter at Elroy last week.

man, John McCullum, age 75, was not a traffic fatality, according to Juneau

Investigation proved that the injuries suffered by the deceased when
he was struck by a car Tuesday Eve. were not the cause of
death. The Elroy man died in
the Hillsboro Hospital about an hour after being struck by a 1965 Chevrolet
station wagon dtiven by Bernard Zenner of
Elroy. According to the
investigation, Mr McCullum, wearing dark clothing stepped from the side walk
on the east side of Academy st. in the path of the car. Zenner told authorities
that he didnot see the amn until it was too late to avoid hitting
him. He sustained some skin
abrasions on the head, left leg and left arm. They appeared to be of minor
nature and the attending dR. was of the opinion thatthe man died of a heart
attack that could have been precipitated by the shock and excitement of the
mishap.
