THOMPSON
The Mauston Star gives an account of a young man named John A. Thompson,
veteran soldier, belonging to Co. H, 2d Regiment, as having mysteriously
disappeared on the night of the 6th inst. It appears that Thompson and three
others were in the saloon of one Jas. Harold. They all drank heavily, and
a quarrel and fight was the consequence, in which the saloon keeper struck
Thompson over the head with a revolver, Thompson walked out of the house,
and since that time has not been seen. A reward of five hundred dollars is
offered for information of his whereabouts. Janesville Weekly Gazette,

A company of 100 day men will be raised in Mauston. The Mauston Star says
The Grand Jury was very busy, it found no less than six indictments. One
against James Herold, Patrick Dore and John Costigan for murder. These parties
are accused of killing John A. Thompson, a veteran soldier, in a drunken
row in a saloon in this place a few weeks since. The case was, on motion
of the defendant, sent to Columbia county for trial. (Janesville Weekly Gazette,
