Israel Skinner married September 11, 1804,
Martha (Patty) Saulsberry (Salisbury) who was born about 1786, probably in
Dutchess Co., NY, daughter of Jasper and Triphenia (Gillett) Saulsberry,
the later a daughter of John and Martha (Dunham) Gillett. The marriage took
place at the home of Charles Gillett, brother of Patty's grandfather, John
Gillett, who lived at the foot of the Shawangunk Mountain in the town of
Deerpark, Orange Co., NY. Jasper Saulsberry belonged to the company called
"The Nine Partners" located east of the North River (Now the Amenia
Region)
Sometime after 1810 the family removed to
Susquehanna Co., PA, (then Luserne Co.) where they located on a farm adjoining
Jacob Skinner's in Oakland Twp. Here is where Dr. Israel Skinner practiced
medicine and raised a large family. He is mentioned as an author and practicing
physician (1814) in Blackman's Susquehanna Co., History. Israel's farm is
said to have been a one time residence of (Mormon) Joseph
Smith.

SKINNER:
There is land records for Jefferson Co., WI
that William T.Skinner purchased
40 acres of land March 1, 1950. Record of this land is in the William T.
Skinner file. Unknown at this time if it was purchased by William T. Skinner
but William T. Skinner did sell some land to Jacob Skinner in
1856.
There is
also 40 acres purchased by a
William Skinner on September 1. 1848. Unsure if this is the same William
Skinner because there is no middle initial of "T" but a copy is in William
T. Skinner's file.
In 1850 census, WI, Jefferson Co., Palmyra
Twp, page 174; William T. Skinner age 24, farmer, property value 22, born

There is a marriage listed in Jefferson Co.,

Sewall of the County of Jefferson in the presence of Widow Sewall, her mother
and Helen Dewall at her nother's residence in the village of Palmyra in the
County of Jefferson. H. T. Lothrop,
minister. I do not know
if this is the same William Skinner but the residence at that time is the
same. I am putting in the history for now til I find more information on
it to prove one way or the other. In all records I never see this one listed
as William T. Skinner, which is always the name of greatgrandfather Skinner.
In 1855 WI Index at WI Historical Society:

There is a War Deed that I have in the Willliam

December 1862 and died the 28th day of March 1898. That she was married under
the name of Sarah Jane Bassett, to said William T. Skinner on the 10th day
of June 1862 by-----, at Philadelphia, PA, there being no legal barrier to
said marriagae. She has not
remarried since the death of said William T. Skinner,
and that she is without other
means of support than her daily labor. There was no children listed under
the age of 16. Her post office was Elroy, WI and she gave her mark by her
signature. Other signatures were W. C. Dunn and Maude V. Dunn.
In one page it states that he was missing
in action at Bull Run and was
in the hospital at, and it states that he had deserted, but the charge of
desertion of August 20, 1862 is now void. This is mentioned int he War Department
Adjutant General Office, Washington , August 14, 1886. He was discharged
December 12, 1862 on surgeons certificate of disability-it appears he was
disabled from a arthiritis. It appears that he had not really desserted but
it was assumed and he had been in the hospital ill and the charge was voided
out.
His certificate of discharge from the Army
of the US, Certificate of Disability for
discarge states that he was
born in Susquehanna Co., PA and is at the time of discharge date, age 35,
five feet and 7 1/2 inches tall light complexion, blue eyes and light hair
and when he enlisted his occupation was a butcher. During the last two months
he has been unfit for duty 61 days. Part of his illness I cannot read on
the copy but part says Chronic diarrhea. His discharge is dated Decmeber
12, 1862 .

The Elroy Tribune dated march 24, 1910 had

Monday, March 21, at the age of 75. Her sons, Frank, Roy and Herman from
Northern Wisconsin and a daughter, Mrs. Greek from Millston came down to
the funeral, which was held on Wednesday.
In the paper also about the same time was
a news item that Mrs. Hattie Smith
and cousin of Wausau are visiting in the home of her Uncle Charles
Skinner.
Sarah Jane Bassett Skinner's death information,

1905 WI state census it states that Sarah

her son Charles. Charles may have given the information and then again Sarah
may have given it and her mind may not have been clear.
She may be a descendant of the Basset's in
England who I have found information in Rootsweb Genealgoy web site. I have
not found Sarah Jane or her father but have found a James m. born 1522, then
son(?) John Basset (one t ) born Tehidy, Cornwall, England and died 1-31-1527
or 28. John Basset married Honor Grenville Viscountess Lisp, born 1476,
Kilhampton, Cornwell, England.
This information may not be part of Sarah Jane's Basset's family but
am holding it here until further information is found.

and Bessie Skinner was Hattie's daughter by a George

Charles Henry Skinner's death certificate located
in the Juneau Co., WI courthouse, book 16 page 426 stated that he died at
5:00 PM and the informant of his death was Elias Skinner, brother to Charles.
In Charles Skinner's probate records at the
Juneau Co., WI courthouse it stated that the information given to the courts
was given by his brother Oliver Skinner. It stated that Frank Skinner's girl
died in childbirth and the she left a child. It stated that the child was
born 1928 in Wausau, WI at St. Mary's Hospital. (That child would be Lillian
Schwantes-Zenner). It stated that her grandparents took her and they raised
her and that was the only heir that Frank Skinner, brother of Charles Skinner
had. The family members mentioned in the probate were: Herman Skinner of
Eagle River, WI, Roy Skinner of Eagle River, Amanda (sister) deceased, Hattie
Manthei residence ?, Joseph Greek lived Eagle River, William Greek lived
Mather, WI, Bessie Slater lived Mather, WI, Dorthy Greek, not married, Blanch
Slater lived Mather, WI. There was a Elmer Greek mentioned in the probate.
I took no information down on him. Charles also had property in Wausau, WI.
The probate records stated that there was 80 acres just outside Wausau,
WI. It stated that he also had
a house in Wausau right beside the
Manthei's. Oliver stated that
there may be a will in Wausau for Charles or personal property and that Oliver
had not seen the will.
The Cemetery Deed for the Elroy Cemetery Assoc.
to Julius and Hattie Manthei recorded on page 57 of the Record of Deeds of
the Elroy Cemetery Association this 19th day of April 1943, shows that Juluis
and Hattie Manthei purchased a burial plot for Charles Skinner of Elroy, WI in the
Elroy Cemetery, Lot number 19, block number 5 for the amoutn of $15.00. Dated
June 17, 1943.

Mrs. Hattie Smith and cousin of Wausau are visiting in the home of her Uncle
Charles Skinner.
In 1920 census, WI, Juneau Co.,Plymouth Twp;
Charles Skinner is age 54 single born WI and lives with his brother Elias
Skinner and Elias's family.
In conversation with Vernie Skinner 4/93; Vernie
stated that Charlie Skinner got the original Skinner home place. Charles
then bought his own place on the edge of Elroy, Juneau Co., WI. A Hattie
Smith and husband Julius Manthei
came to stay with Charley and somehow got the
farm from Charley. Charley bought
about an 80 acre farm outside Elroy after that. Elias Skinner helped his
brother Charley on that farm between 1934 and 1935 to clear out many trees.
See Elias Skinner "notes" for information on his stay on Charlie's
farm.
Kay Skinner Bones told me in converstion 8-25-92
that Hattie an Julius Manthei lived with Charles Skinner outside Elroy, WI,

SKINNER:
THIS IS ONLY THE INFORMATION THAT HAS APPEARED IN OBITUARIES AND OFFICIAL
DOCUMENTS AND I HAVE PRINTED JUST WHAT THERE PREVIOUSLY WRITTEN. I DID NOT
PUT MY OPINION IN THIS AT
ALL. IT IS CONFUSING
AND THERE IS NO WAY THERE WILL BE A CLEAR CUT ANSWER . I HAVE HAD SOMEONE
SEARCH MADISON VITAL RECORDS AND THEY HAVE FOUND NO MARRIAGE OF FRANK SKINNER
AND GRACE THOMPSON.
I put Frank Skinner listed with wife Grace
Thompson as was stated in different documents and news items in paper but
I have found nothing in concrete evidence that shows that he was actually
married to her. All family confirms that fact that he never
married.
In the 1914 city directory for Wausau, Marathon
Co., WI it shows Frank Skinner as a laborer living at: house on Thomas-S
E corner 11th Ave. South. He lives in the same house as Hattie Greek lives
(His niece).
In the 1916 city directory of Wausau, Marathon
Co., WI, it shows F. L. Skinner at Route 6 Wausau.
In the 1918 city directory for Wausau, it shows
Franklin L. Skinner, laborer living at 1015
Thomas. Also living in the same
home is Julius and Hattie Manthei, and Julius is listed as laborer and Julius
is the owner of the house and Frank Skinner is shown as renter at 1015
Thomas.
In 1920 census,WI, Marathon Co., Wausau city
12 Ave.,ED 50 page 2; Frank Skinner is
Ed'd with Julius Manthei and
is listed as Uncle. (The Uncle of Julius's wife, Hattie.)
Wrights Wausau City and Marathon County Directoy
for 1925, page 775 shows Frank Skinner owning 80 acres in section 20 with
an assessed value of $1250.
In some records it states that Frank Skinner
was married to a Grace Thompson on the date mentioned on the family page
and that they were the parents of Bessie Maude Skinner, (who's real mother
was Hattie Bates). It is unknown if that is true or not or if Frank took
the responsibility of Bessie to protect her from her real father who was
supposedly a drunk and Hattie did not want George Smith, Bessie's father
to find her. It appears that Frank was not married to a Grace Thompson but
a story that him and Hattie kept to protect the child. On his tombstone it
states FATHER born 1878 and
died 1933.
The death certificate of Franklin Skinner which
is located in the Marathon Co., WI courthouse at Wausau WI, states the following
information from Volume 42 page 355:
Franklin L. Skinner, died August 21, 1933 at 2 P.M. in Town of
Maine-Marathon Co. Age at death: 55 years 2 months and 22 days. Date of Birth;
May 30, 1978 at Elroy, WI. Informant was Mrs. Julius Manthei of
Wausau. Burial at Pine
Grove Cem., on August 23, 1933, cause of death: rupture of Aneurysm of Aorta,
contributing cause of death was Myocarditis, confirmed by X-ray, Doctor;
H. C. Frenzel, Wausau, WI, Widower of Grace Skinner. ( An added note that
was sent to me by Lillian Zenner in 1995 stated: It showed Frank's address
as 1101 So. 11th Ave. and his place of death as Town of Maine. We checked
the Death Index for Grace Skinner and Grace Thompson and found no death record
for her in this county for those years. On his death record his year of birth
is 1878 which is the same as was put on his gravestone.)
The funeral notice for Frank Skinner appeared
in the Wausau Daily Record Hearld, Wedensday, August 23, 1933, page
4: SKINNER
FUNERAL Funeral services
for Frank Skinner of the town of Maine, who died here Monday at the home
of his niece, Mrs. Julius Manthei, 1101 South 11th Ave, were held this afternoon
at the Manthei residence. The Rev. E. C Grauer officaiting. Burial was in
Pine Grove Cem. The obituary had about the same thing but it did add that
he was born May 30, 1878 in Elroy. He was married to Grace Thompson 25 years
ago in Kilbourn, who died a later. For twenty years the deceased had resided
in the town of Maint. Mr. Skinner is survived by one granddaughter, Lillian
Schwantes of Schofield, 6 brothers, Charles Skinner of Mauston, Elias Skinner
and Oliver Skinner of Elroy, Roy Skinner and Herman Skinner of Eagle River
and Arthur Skinner of Duluth and
one sister , Mrs. Amanda Greek of Eagle River.

found in the Illinois Valley News, January 22, 1966 and is in part: A raging
fire claimed the live of 89 year old Herman Leslie Skinner of Rockydale Road
early Tuesday morning and reduced his frame dwelling to
rubble. Neighbor Dennis Robin, 18, arriving home at the
time spotted the fire, called his father to call the fire department and
rushed over to the small house. Flames kept him from entering the rear door
and as Robin rushed around to the front, he spotted Skinner, in the flames,
just emerging. heat again kept Robin from getting close so he ran home for
a blanket. Returning to the
fire, the youth was aided by Fred Davis, who happened to be passing by at
the time. In dragging Skinner away, Skinner with only shirt collar and cuffs
remaining of his clothing, was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. C. N.
