1.  JOSEPH1 PIGEON was born July 23, 1815 in Canada, and died October 01, 1881 in New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI.  He married ELIZABETH SEYMOUR October 03, 1859 in Volney, Oswego Co., NY, daughter of ANDREW SEYMOUR and ELIZA ?.  She was born April 07, 1840 in NY, and died March 31, 1910 in New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI.

 

Notes for JOSEPH PIGEON:

Joseph Pigeon's pension records show that his name was Pigeon in the Civil War and it appears to have been that all the time through without any changes of name.  In one Affidavit states that he was a resident of the Village of Fulton, Oswego Co., NY.   In one page dated June 22, 1910 it states that Eliza Pigeon has 4 adult heirs and a small house worh from $150-$200.00.   On another page date August 1888, it states that Mr. Pigeon is a Frenchman and speaks very broken and undistinct which account for errors in understanding.   Another page dated March 8, 1878 states that Joseph Pigeon was enrolled on the 15th day of Janurary 1864 at Syracuse, NY in the 3rd regiment of NY  light artillery to serve 3 yars or during the war, and was mustered into service as a private on the 15th day of January 1864 at Auburn, NY, in the 3rd regiment of NY. Light Artillery volunteers to serve 3 years or during the war. On the muster rolls Co. B of that Regiment, for the months of March and April 1864 to February 28, 1865 he was reported present. Reg. Ret. reports Co. detached at Morris Island, SC. Roll for March and April 1865, present. etc.     In the Widow's pension it states that the claimant was of New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI and she got $8.00 per month starting Febraury 26, 1885 and two dollars a month for each additonal child, Francis David born March 14, 1871, Antoini born November 8, 1873 and Freddie P. born November 17, 1878.   It states further in the pension record that Eliza was married under the name Eliza Seymour to said Joseph PIgeon on the 3rd day of October 1859 by Francis Pierce a minister of the Gospel, at the Town of Volney, Oswego Co., NY and that there was no legal barrier to the marriage and that neither had been married before.    It also states that Joseph enlisted under the name of Joseph Pigeon.    These pention record are in Joseph Pigeon's file. 

 

In 1870 census, NY, Oswego Co., Twp. of Volney, City of Fulton, page 649; Joseph Pigeon age 45, male, white occupation is unreadable on the census, does not own real estate or personal property, born-Canada, father and mother foreign born, cannot read or write and is eligible to vote.  Eliza, age 30, female, white, profession-keeping house, she was born NY, father and mother foreign born, she cannot read or write. Zoe,female, white, age 11, born NY, Margaret, female, white, age 5, born NY. The live near the Andrew View family born Canada. Also in the same residence is a A. Seymore born Canada. and also near the Pigeon family is a Philip Seymore born Canada, Margaret Seymore, born Canada, and Peter, George and Jane Seymore all born Canada.  also neighbors is the Halls family and the Sheldon family.

 

In 1880 census, WI, Juneau Co., Villiage of New Lisbon ED___page ___: Joseph is age 59, occupation-laborer, he cannot read or write and he was born Canada as were both of his parents. Eliza, wife, age 44, keeping house, she cannot read or write and she was born NY and both fo her parents were born Canada. Margaret, daughter, age 15, at home, she can read and write and she was born NY. She did not attend school last year. Zoe, daughter, age 12, at home, attended school with the last year. She was born NY. David, son, age 8, lives at home, did attend school last year, he cannot read and write, born NY. Anthony, son, age 7, lives at home, born NY. Peter F., son age 5 or 6, born November, lives at home, born WI

In 1895 WI state census, Juneau Co., Town of New Lisbon; Mrs. E. Pidgeon, 3 males, 1 female living at home. 3 born USA and one born other country.

 

In 1900 census,Soundex, WI, Juneau Co.,Bridge St. New Lisbon,  ED ?? page 2; Eliza Pigeon born 1835, age 64, born in Canada-French, Citizenship NR,  Eliza does not list the number of children that she has had nor the number living. David, son, born March 1872 age 28, born WI, Fred, son date fo birth: NR, born WI,

 

In 1905 WI state census, Juneau Co., 2nd ward, City of New Lisbon, ED ?,  page ?,  Eliza Pigeon, head of house, age 63, widowed, it does not state where she was born nor where her parents were born, she owns the home, it is free of mortage. David, son age 32, single, born WI, does not know where parents were born, occupation-horse trader. He has worked the last 12 months., Paul Lutz, grandchild, age 10, no listing of where he was born or his parents.  `

Eliza Pigeon lived at 518 First Street, New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI, when Dorthy Young-Pigeon was brought home to live with the David Pigeon family. She was a small baby and they raised her. This resident was right around the corner from where Dave and Lydia Pigeon lived.

 

Eliza Pigeon's death registration information which is located in book page 536 of Juneau Co., WI deaths shows the following: Eliza Pigeon, female, white, widow, date of birth-April 7, 1842-New York, father-Andre Clomen-born Canada, mother Eliza Calmore, born NY, occupation-common laborer, informant-Dora Pigeon, date of death-March 31, 1910, cause of death-Tubercrelor disease of stomach and bowels, duration-4-5 years.

Notes for PETER FRED PIGEON:

The obit of Fred Pigeon which appeared in the New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI newspaper, June 20, 1901, stated: Fred Pigeon, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Pigeon of the city of New Lisbon, died at the home of his mother of consumption on June 12, 1901, age 22 years.  He was ill for several months. The funeral was held last Thursday, June 13, 1901, morning from the Methodist Church in New Lisbon, the Rev. Arn assisted by Rev. Hocking officiating. The family has the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.

SPIES October 27, 1883 in Juneau Co, Wisconsin, son of HENRY SPIES and ELIZABETH ?.  He was born June 21, 1841 in Erie Co., NY, and died February 13, 1919 in Danville, Vermilion Co., IL.  She married (3) JAMES MARTZ August 16, 1903 in Tomah, Monroe Co. There is no divorce for Charles Spies and Margaret Pigeon Spies found in Marathon Co. from 1900-1905. This was checked by researcher Beth Stahr in 1995 and there was no marriages for Margaret in Marathon Co., for Maggie/Margaret Spies in Marathon Co., from 1908-1921

In 1916 Merrill, Lincoln Co., WI sity directory shows a James an Margaret Martz living at 609 Grand Ave and later at 609 State St. Also residing there was a Harrison Martz(sp) a laborer. James was a paper mill worker as was John Abrahamson, whose wife's name was Philmenia.

 

In 1920 census, WI, Lincoln Co., Merrill city, ED 114, page 3b: Margaret Martz is a boarder, she is age 52 widowed, born NY, no occupation, Mary Martz is age 12 and is a boarder. They live in the home of John Abrahamson age 70, born Finland, citizenship-1893 NA, 1909 (?) works day laborer on the city streets.  and his wife Phileman,age 66. Phileman's mother is Canadian French, and their is a step son of the Abrahamson's, Frank Tauchett, age 28, Frank was born in WI and his Dad is Canadian French and the mother is born in WI.  Possibly the Frank has a tie to the Pigeon family who are Canadian French.

 

The funeral information from the Merrill WI newspaper, April 12, 1928,for Margaret is as follows: Funeral Friday.  Mrs. Margaret Pigeon-Pierson, who died Tuesday morning (about April 10, 1928) of heart trouble at Holy Cross Hospital was born October 18, 1865 and leaves her widower, Henry Pierson, three sons and three daughters, Mrs August (Mary) Kottman, Mrs. Francis Tozier, Mrs. Elsie Englin and Harry, Charles, and Edward Spies. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at the Church of the Ascesion.

 

Gloria Tozier Krueger told me in converstion March 1995 that her mother, Francis Spies Tozier told her (Gloria) that her (Francis) mother Margaret Pigeon's real name was Margaret Montre. Gloria had heard the name Pigeon and knew that it was related but did not know how.

This family lives about 5 residences from David Pigeon.

 

The obituary of William Henry Howland, found in New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI newspaper on January 9, 1941, states that he is the son of John and Mary (nee COLLINS) Howland. He was born April 18, 1861 in Clifton, WI and died at the home of his son in law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Barrett of Camp Douglas on December 29, 1940.  He was united in marriage at New Lisbon, Juneau, Co., WI, on July 18, 1886 to Mary Jane Horton, who preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 1937.  To this union was born 13 children, 4 of whom died in infancy and are buried in the New Lisbon, WI cemetery.  Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Eva Hodges, Camp Douglas, WI; Mrs Nora Hyde, WI Rapids; Mrs. Mae Schwan, Iron Ridge; Mrs. Myrtle Wagner, New Lisbon; Mrs. Jessie Man, Cleveland, OH; Charles of WI Rapids; Mrs Irma Barrett, Camp Douglas; Mrs. Caroline Martin and John of New Lisbon; also 1 sister, Mrs. Susan Prothero, Kimberly, Idaho; 27 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

In 1903-04 Wausau City Directory, Wausau, Marathon Co., WI, shows Charles Spies on page 197, res. 118 South 1st Ave.   In 1910 city directory page 234 Charles is listed as laborer living at 107 Alexander with Harrison Spies, laborer, living at same address.  In 1912 city directory page 251 Charles is listed as laborer living at 1037 Harrison Boul. and a Harrison Spies, laborer living at the same address.

 

1905 census, WI state, Marathon Co., WI, Wausau city, 9th ward page 995; Charles Spies, head, age 64, divorced, born NY, parents born Germany, occupation-cook, Charles, son age 17, born WI, Harrison, son, age 13, born WI, Edward, son, age 9 born WI. All  are single but for the father Charles who is divorced.

 

I was told by Walter Spies on 10-25-96 that Charley Spies died down in Danville IL about 1919. I believe it was in old folks home and that Charlie's second wife was a full-blooded Indian woman. Wally's son Danny has done much research on the Spies family.

 

The information of the death and birth that I have on Charles Spies came off a photo in the possession of Beverly Spies. The handwritting on the back of the photos was her father's Edward Spies. I am using those as the accurate dates.

 

Buried at the Danville, Vermilion Co., IL National Cem., date of death-February 13, 1919, buried in section 10, row 2, number 2705.  This information was sent to me by the Danville Public Library, Vemilion Co.,IL,  June 1997. I wrote the Danville National Cem if there was any more information available on Charles Spies buried there and they called me to tell me the information that I have is all the information that there is on this burial.

Notes for JAMES MARTZ:

James Martz's obit reads; James Martz passes away.  Succumbs at early hour this morning-had been ailing for several months.  James Martz, a resident of this city for many years answered the final summons at 4 o’clock in the morning at his home on Maine St. in the 6th Ward. The deceased had been ailing with a complication of diseases during the past summer and every effort available was secured in effort to regain his former good health.  Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, about ten and twelve years of age. The deceased was 56 years old. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 from the home and 2:00 from Trinity Lutheran Church.

Notes for ZOIE DORA PIGEON:

I have copy of Dora Pigeon Lutz's Alien registration card in the "Lutz" file and also a photo of her with a left thumb print. I do not know why there is one on file since she always stated that she was born in NY.

Mrs. Dora S. Lutz obituary states that she was age 73 when she died and a long time resident of New Lisbon, (Juneau Co., WI) and that she died at the home of her son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lutz in this city, Friday, December 27, 1940. She was born in NY state. Her husband, Christopher Lutz, died several yeas ago. Funeral services were held at the home of her son Joseph, Monday afternoon and burial was made in the family plot in the New Lisbon Cemetery. She is survived by four sons, Joseph, David, and Fred of this city and Paul of LaValle, and three daughters, Mrs Mae Isaacson, (Myrtle) Mrs. Victor Wells, and (Alice) Mrs. John Fike of this city. Her son William preceded her in death,

 

Another obit which I have a copy of states: Mrs. Chris Lutz, nee Dora Zoie Pidgeon, was born in Ny state August 12, 1867 and die at the home of her son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lutz, in this city (New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI), December 27, 1940 at the age of 73 years and 4 months and 12 days. When a young girl she moved with her parents to New Lisbon where she was united in marriage to Christ. Lutz. Thirteen children were born to that union, seven of whom preceded her in death. Mr. Lutz died many years ago. Surviving are the following children; Joe Lutz of New Lisbon, Paul Lutz, La Valle, Mrs. Alice Fike, Town of Clearfield, Mrs. Myrtle Wells, Fred Lutz, Dave Lutz, Mrs. May Isaacson, New Lisbon, and also two brothers, David and Anthony Pidgeon of New Lisbon, 35 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Lillly-Pigeon-Skinner told me on a visit with her on April 11, 1998, that her family lived down in Baraboo, on Lake St. in about 1916, for a short while. He father went down there to find work.   She also told me that when her brother Davey was little the David Pigeon family moved up to Merrill, WI, where David Pigeon's sister lived in order to find work ther. That was following the time that the house burned, which was across the tracks from where the later residence was.  She also told me at that time that Peter LaSarge, was her father's cousin. She told me on the same date that her name was Lilly Mae Pigeon, but when she began school the teachers started calling her Lillian and that is where she was first called Lillian and that name was what she was called for many years.

 

Lilly Pigeon-Skinner told me on November 1, 1992 that her folks lived just north of the tracks, and the house burned from sparks from the RR train. They then moved up into the Wausau, Marathon Co., WI are for about 1 year, where her Dad worked. Lilly had not been born yet. This house that burned was just north of where they later lived, south of the tracks  Lily was born across the river, and then they moved over by "Rothes" old plant, near the school and then they moved down by the river again.

David Pigeon's obit which was in the New Lisbon Times and the Juneau co., Argus Thursday August 7, 1947 is as follows:  David Pidgeon was long-time resident here.   David Pidgeon, son of Joseph and Eliza Pidgeon was born March 14, 1871 in Osego Co.,( this should be Oswego Co.) NY  and died at his home in this city on Monday, July 28, 1947 at the age of 76 years, 4 months, and 14 days. He had been in ill health for the past five eyars and the alst two of which he was bed ridden.  At the age of seven years, Mr. Pidgeon came to New Lisbon with his parents and had resided her since.  On October 12, 1908, Lydia Fike was united in marriage to him. this union four children were born. They also adopted a daughter Dorthy.  Mr. Pidgeon was a kind and loving  husband, father and friend.   Surviving him are his widow, Lydia, a son Joseph of New Lisbon; a son David and two daughters, Lilly (Mrs. Henry Skinner) of Mauston; and Dorthy (Mrs. John Howland) state of Oregon; 13 grandchildren and a brother Anthony Pidgeon of New Lisbon; other relatives and many friends. A son, Fred Edward and a brother Fred preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at the Lamson Funeral Home last Thursday afternoon with the Rev. Wilson Martin, pastor of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was made in the New Lisbon cemetery. Relatives from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. David Pidgeon , Mr. and Mrs. Henry Skinner, Mauston, Claire E. Pidgeon, daughters Lauretta and Carol Ann, and Mrs. Henry Boerema, Chicago; Mrs. Clarence Aldinger, Marshfield, Mr. and Mrs. R. Reynolds, Sparta, Paul Lutz and family, LaValle, Edward Schyska, Madison.

Obituary for Lydia L. Modjeski, which was in the January 18,?? 1977 issue of the New Lisbon paper is as follows:  Last rites for Lydia L. Modjeski, 84, of New Lisbon who passed away on Thursday January 20th at Hess Memorial Nursing Home after a long illness. She was the daughter of Andrew and Susie Buher Fike and was born December 4, 1892, in Cazenovia, WI. She was married to Dave Pigeon on October 12, 1908. He preceded her in death in 1947. She was united in marriage to Tony Modjeski on April 17, 1960 at New Lisbon, he passed away on April 20, 1964. She lived in New Lisbon area for about seventy years. Survivors include; one son, David Pigeon of Chantilly, VA, one daughter, Mrs. Henry Skinner (Lillian) of Mauston, one sister, Mrs Rose Nicolaw, Duluth, MN, 4 grandchildren and 12 great grand children. Funeral services were held Monday at 1:00 Pm at the Hare Funeral Home in New Lisbon with burial in the family lot in the New Lisbon City Cemetery. 

 

She is buried in the New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI Cem. S23-R16 (space)

Joseph Pigeon's obit which was in the April 22, 1971 edition of the New Lisbon paper is: Joseph Pigeon, age 61, New Lisbon, died Friday, April 16, 1971 at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was born in New Lisbon and was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad as a section hand. He is survived by his mother Mrs. Lydia Modeski of New Lisbon, a brother, David of Fairfax, West VA, and two sisters, Mrs. Henry Skinner of Mauston, amd Mrs. John Howland of Portland, Oregon. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Tuesday April 20th at the Hare Funeral home in New Lisbon with the Rev. Ralph Melford officiating. Burial was in the New Lisbon City Cemetery.

Daisy Pigeons obit which was in the October 3, 1946 issue of the New Lisbon, WI, paper is as follows:  Polio is fatal to Mrs. Joseph Pidgeon.  Mrs. Joseph Pidgeon, 30, died Thursday Evening  in St. Camillea's Hospital, LaCrosse of Poliomyelites. She had been a patient there the past week and had been placed in the iron lung. Her illness covered a period of about 10 days. Mrs. Pidgeon, nee Daisy E. Murphy, was born at Wyevill, WI on September 27, 1916. A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Murphy, town of Clearfield, she was united in marriage to Joseph Pidgeon on december 29, 1936. Surviving besides the husband and parents are two sisters and six brothers, other relatives and many friends. Private funeral services will be held today (Thursday October 3, 1946) at 2 PM at the Lamson Funeral home with Rev. Wilson Martin officiating. Burial will be made at the New Lisbon City Cem. Willson Martin was pastor of First Baptist Church in New Lisbon, WI.
