Lindina Fire - 1921

Fire Destroys Cheese Factory
The Mauston Star
Thursday, Sept. 1, 1921

The Lindina cheese factory owned by A. E. Steckling, and his home adjoining were totally destroyed by fire Monday night.

The fire was noticed about 11 p.m. and had gained such headway that only the furniture on the first floor of the home was saved.  The blaze apparently started in the boiler room where the wells were, thus shutting off the water supply.  Hard work on the part of neighbors saved his garage and trucks and the Delco power plant was saved from the factory.

This cheese factory was one of the oldest and best known in Juneau county and its products of the highest quality.  For many years J. W. Cross now of Milwaukee, conducted the factory but Art Steckling, one of the top-notch cheese makers of the state has operated the business for several years and built up one of the most modern factories in this part of the state.

It is stated that the factory will probably not be rebuilt immediately, though this decision may be changed.  The loss is estimated at about $8000, with insurance of about $5800.

Chief Jess Young and his fire fighters took the chemical engine out from this city and did good work with it though they arrived late.
