Elias's dates of birth and christening dates

At
some time after 1892,
Elias moved the house to where it has been ever since.
Elias

The family of Olaf
Johnson, a Swedish immigrant, lived in the same
with
the Slorahns. On one of his trips to
Exposition, Elias must have met a young Olga
Johnson, Olaf's daughter, while he
was
visiting his sister Rosanna and his brother-in-law
Martin Slorahn, and, so the
story
goes, vowed to marry her when
she came of age. He did, in 1908, and carried her to

Elias was, in many ways, a Renaissance man:
he was a farmer who grew crops to feed his
dairy cattle, his horses, his pigs, and his
chickens, housed in a barn he himself built,
which still stands; he of course established
vegetable and fruit gardens; he planted white
pine trees as a windbreak; he grew sorghum,
and processed it in his home-made sorghum
press, as well as growing wheat and oats and
timothy for the horses; from the frozen lake
in the winter, he harvested and stored the ice
under sawdust in his (again) home-made
ice-
house; he harvested fish from the lake; he was
a phrenologist; he was an avid student and
reader, and kept abreast of current world events;
he was an experimental photographer,
subscribing to periodicals so that he could
perfect his art; he was a motorist, buying a
1911 Black automobile; he experimented with
steam engines and gas engines to cut lumber and
firewood and thresh grain; he established a
picnic grounds at
relax; he operated a launch and took visitors
on excursions on the lake; he was a farrier,
having built a shop from logs in which he created
iron tools and fixtures and horseshoes
at his home-made forge; he was a woodworker
who built his own treadle lathe; and he was a
wonderful husband and father and midwife who
assisted his wife Olga when she delivered
their four children at home.
At one point, he was a Justice of the Peace in Necedah
Township [see
below].
Elias died of heart disease in 1933, and was
buried with many other Jorandbys in
