Modified Register for Elias Christian Jorandby

The Jorandby Family of Fish Lake, Necedah Township, Juneau County

 First Generation

      1. Elias Christian Jorandby  was born1  on 5 Aug 1862 in Strongs Prairie Twp, Adams, Wisconsin. He died on 26 Apr 1933 in Necedah Twp, Juneau, Wisconsin. He was buried2  in the West Cemetery, Arkdale, Adams, Wisconsin.

"If you borrow an ax, return it sharper than it was when you borrowed it."

Elias's father Christopher Andersen Jorandby was born on 22 Apr 1824 on the Jøranbyhuset

farm near Hedalen, Sør-Aurdal, Oppland, Norway.  He emigrated from Christiana (Oslo

on 27 Jun 1851 on the brig Incognito, and arrived in New York on 30 Aug 1851.  During
the eight week passage, he met Karen Ingebretsdatter Bjørneby, who was emigrating with

her family from Hedmark.  Christopher was #17 on the Incognito manifest, while Karen

and her family were just a few lines above him.  After a brief stopover in the Norwegian

colony near Black Earth in Vermont Twp, Dane Co, Christopher and Karen moved to Strongs

Prairie Twp, Adams Co, and were married on 4 Oct 1855 at the Roche-a-Cree Norwegian

Lutheran Church.  Elias was the fourth of ten children of Christopher and Karen.

Elias's dates of birth and christening dates cannot be confirmed from original church

records, because the records were lost when the Roche-a-Cree log church, built in 1853,

burned in 1866.  According to the church records which do still exist, Elias was confirmed

on 27 Jun 1880.  The Ministerialbog for Roche a Cree n.e.l. Menighed i Adams Co. Wisc

1867-1892 is at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arkdale.  His confirmation record lists a birth

date of 5 Aug 1863, and a baptismal date of 9 Nov 1863.  It should be 1862, and is so

listed in the 1900 US Federal census of Necedah Township.

Elias's middle name Christian may honor his mother's older brother Christian Bjorneby, who

died of disease in February 1862, while training with the Union Army at Camp Randall,

Madison.

In the 1880s, Elias and his brother Peder, encouraged by their father C. A. Jorandby

purchased and homesteaded 240 acres of Sec. 22, Twp 18N, Range 4E, in Juneau County, on

the west bank of the Wisconsin River.  This is the Fish Lake homestead.  It was at the

western terminus of the so-called 1870s "Norwegian Ferry" across the Wisconsin River

operated by Isaac Olson.  [see Lawrence Onsager's discussion of this ferry on p. 15 of

his "Introduction" to his Juneau County, Wisconsin Bygdebok: A Genealogy of the Norwegian
Settlers, 1850-1950
.]

Peder purchased Lots 6 and 7 in 1886 when he was 17.  In 1888, they filed homestead claims

on most of the rest of Sec 22.  Elias and Peder built a house on the top of the bluff,

marked on the 1898 plat map of Necedah Township, and occupied it in order to comply with

the residency requirements of the Homestead Act of 1862.  Peder died of TB in 1892.  At

some time after 1892, Elias moved the house to where it has been ever since.    Elias

received his Homestead Patent in 1897, which would indicate that he had filed a claim in

1892, about the time his brother died.

Several weddings, baptisms, and a funeral or two have taken place in the front room of the

Fish Lake house.  Elias kept his homemade desk in that front room.

About the same time that Elias and Peder disassembled and moved the two-story house off

the bluff in 1892, Elias's younger sister Rosanna (b. 1864) married Martin Slohahn (an

emigrant from Norway), and set up housekeeping in a near west side Scandinavian

neighborhood in Chicago.  At about the same time that Elias's older sister Julia married

Ole Shetney in Strongs Prairie, Elias's mother Karen moved in with him at the Fish Lake

homestead in Juneau County, there being no other children in her home in Adams County.

The family of Olaf Johnson, a Swedish immigrant, lived in the same Chicago neighborhood

with the Slorahns.  On one of his trips to Chicago, perhaps after the 1893 Columbian

Exposition, Elias must have met a young Olga Johnson, Olaf's daughter, while he was

visiting his sister Rosanna and his brother-in-law Martin Slorahn, and, so the story

goes, vowed to marry her when she came of age.  He did, in 1908, and carried her to the

Fish Lake homestead to set up housekeeping and to start a family.

Elias was, in many ways, a Renaissance man: he was a farmer who grew crops to feed his

dairy cattle, his horses, his pigs, and his chickens, housed in a barn he himself built,

which still stands; he of course established vegetable and fruit gardens; he planted white

pine trees as a windbreak; he grew sorghum, and processed it in his home-made sorghum

press, as well as growing wheat and oats and timothy for the horses; from the frozen lake

in the winter, he harvested and stored the ice under sawdust in his (again) home-made ice-

house; he harvested fish from the lake; he was a phrenologist; he was an avid student and

reader, and kept abreast of current world events; he was an experimental photographer,

subscribing to periodicals so that he could perfect his art; he was a motorist, buying a

1911 Black automobile; he experimented with steam engines and gas engines to cut lumber and

firewood and thresh grain; he established a picnic grounds at Fish Lake where people could

relax; he operated a launch and took visitors on excursions on the lake; he was a farrier,

having built a shop from logs in which he created iron tools and fixtures and horseshoes

at his home-made forge; he was a woodworker who built his own treadle lathe; and he was a

wonderful husband and father and midwife who assisted his wife Olga when she delivered

their four children at home.  At one point, he was a Justice of the Peace in Necedah

Township [see below].

Elias died of heart disease in 1933, and was buried with many other Jorandbys in the West

Cemetery a mile west of Arkdale,Wisconsin.
