Preface
Mindful of the fact that there always comes a time in every persons life, when they desire to turn back the pages of history, that throws any light on the character of their ancestors, - be that light ever so dim: ~~~~
Gladly do they receive any evidence of the chain that binds the present to the past, be it ever so slight. At that time comes it always brings pangs of regret, and often blame, that those of our blood relation gave us so little of who, what, and when they were ~~~ but less of undo we chide ourselves for committing the wrong that we pass onto those that come after us, deeming as we do, that our poor lives are no factor, and not realizing that - though weak we are, that we may be the link, the grand lives that have been, to the truly noble that will come after us.
To satisfy this always recurring desire, to the extent that within me lies, although shorn by the past, of connections much regretted, the duty still remains. ~~~ And I have thought it becoming to this museum.
The sentiment is just and the practice is wise. Our ears should not be deaf to the voice of time. It is well to review the deeds of our fathers and pass that just verdict on them we expect from posterity on our own.
Again it is a piece of nature and of common sense, that the throbbing cord that holds us to our kindred, our friends and our homes, that is not to be denied or resisted.
They are divine bards, and are the friends of my virtue, of my intellect and of my strength.
They admonish me that the gleams which flash across my mind are not mine, but that they had the like and reverenced them ~~~ so I love them ~~~ Noble thoughts go out from them, inviting me to resist evil.
The monuments they have in their honor, are simple frills enough. A few slabs of granite, dug just below the surface of the soil, and laid upon the top of it. But as we have learned that the up-heaved mountain, from which these slabs or flakes were broken, was once a glowers mass of white heat, slowly crystalized, then uplifted by the central fires of this globe. So that the rocks of the events it appropriately marks are in the heart of the universe.
It is little we can do for each other. We accompany our youths with sympathy and manifold old sayings of the wise to the gate of the arena, and bid them adieu, taking our place in the natural order of things.
In the eternity of nature how recent our antiquities appear. The imagination is impatient of a cycle so short.
Who can tell how many thousand years, every day, the clouds have shaded these fields with their purple arriving.
The river by whose banks most of us was born, every winter for ages, has spread its crust of ice over the great meadows and valleys which, in ages, it has formed.
But the little society of men who now, for a few years, fish in this river, plough the fields it washes, mow the grass and reap the corn, shortly shall hurry from its banks, as did our forefathers.
"Man's life." So the sparrow that enters in a window, flutters around the house, and flies out another, and now knoweth whence he came, or whither he goes. So the reason we should give to our being, what permanence we can. That we should recall the Past and expect the Future. Yet the race survives whilst the individual dies.
But we will not hide their honorable gray hairs under perishable laurel leaves, but with the eye of affection and veneration revive their memory! Let not the solemn shadows of the past ages fall over us in vain.
I feel some unwillingness to quit the remembrance of the past, with all the hope of the future, I feel that we are leaving the old, consecrated as it has been by the presence and activity of the purest men.
But even more sacred influences than these, have mingled here with the strain of human life.
The merit of those who fill a space in the worlds history, who are bourn forward, as it - were, by the weight of thousands whom they lead, shed a perfume less, than do the sacrifices of private virtue.
I sketch herein all records relating to my family, and its various branches, that are covered by my records and knowledge. Trusting that when that longing to roll back the past and bring into view that unbroken chain that binds us to the past, and whose unforged links extend into the future, comes to any of our little band, the part I formed in it will not be robed in obscurity, yet the mists of time are sure to dim its brightness by transference to newer and shining links.
Following the Genealogical Tables, will be found a complete record of things, both curious and rare, many worthless and common, many interesting from past or present associations, not a few contain food for interesting though and study. Compressing as they do the result of a promiscuous fathering together, through a busy and active life. Unguided and unframed. Only chips gathered within range of the "Little Old Red School House. " No Tyndall or Darwin to suggest, no Smithsonian to receive, no mind skilled in Nature to arrange. Only the product of the natural instinct inherent in man. The desire to investigate and reflect.
From the desire of the continuance of the sentiments & feelings expressed
I dedicate this record to my beloved son Jefferson Eli Heath. Dated Mauston,
Wis Nov. 22nd 1900. Jeff T. Heath
