ANOTHER INDIAN EXCITEMENT.
A heartless villain, calling himself KING, on Sunday night, perpetrated a practical joke upon some six or eight families on the Mauston road, which might have proved fatal to one of the victims. He went from house to house in great haste, warning the people to flee to Mauston for security, as several hundred Chippewa Indians were near, killing and scalping all who came in their way.
His story was told with an earnestness which carried conviction, and the families warned, started in great haste, but before they reached Mauston, they met two of the party who had gone on in advance, who reported that it was a sell. At one house, the woman, who was dangerously ill, was placed on a bed in a wagon, and driven three or four miles and back. The chap was fooled them has not been seen since.
