She has three children with her; Abbie Howland age 11, Mary Howland age 10, and Franklin Howland age ?

3.  WILLIAM HENRY2 HOWLAND (JOHN1) was born April 18, 1861 in Clifton, WI, and died December 29, 1940 in Camp Dougles, Juneau Co., WI.  He married (1) MARGARET PIGEON March 21, 1881 in Juneau Co.,WI, daughter of JOSEPH PIGEON and ELIZABETH SEYMOUR.  She was born October 18, 1865 in Fulton, Oswego Co.,NY, and died April 09, 1928 in Merrill, Lincoln Co., WI.  He married (2) MARY JANE HORTON July 18, 1886 in New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI.  She was born December 07, 1867 in Oxford, Marquette Co., WI, and died February 12, 1937 in Mew Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI.

William Howland head, rents, 8 for property value, no radio, age 67, married age 24 when married, can read and write. born WI, both parents born England, works as laborer at odd jobs. Mary, wife, age 63, , married at age 20, can read and write, born WI, father NY, mother WI.  John, son, age 21, single, can read and write, born WI and both parents born WI. laborer of odd jobs. This family lives about 5 residences from David Pigeon.

The obituary of William Henry Howland, found in New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI newspaper on January 9, 1941, states that he is the son of John and Mary (nee COLLINS) Howland. He was forn April 18, 1861 in Clifton, WI and died at the home of his son in law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. T.W. Barrett of Camp Douglas on December 29, 1940.  He was united in marriage at New Lisbon, Juneau, Co., WI, on July 18, 1886 to Mary Jane Horton, who preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 1937.  To this union was born 13 children, 4 of whom died in infancy and are buried in the New Lisbon, WI cemetery.  Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Eva Hodges, Camp Douglas, WI; Mrs Nora Hyde, WI Rapids; Mrs. mae Schwan, Iron Ridge; Mrs Myrtle Wagner, New Lisbon; Mrs. Jessie Man, Cleveland, OH; Charles of WI Rapids; Mrs Irma Barrett, Camp Douglas; Mrs Caroline Martin and John of New Lisbon; also 1 sisiter, Mrs. Susan Prothero, Kimberly, Idaho; 27 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

 In 1900 census, WI, Juneau Co., New Lisbon City, ED 84, page 5:  Charles Spies, head, age 59, born October 1840, born NY, both parents born Germany, Maggie, wife, age 36, born October 1863, had 7 children and 6 living, born NY, father born French Canada, mother born NY, married 16 years, Charles, son, age 13, born 1887, NY, Amerson (sp) I think this is actually Harrison, son, born 1893 WI, Francis, daughter, born 1896, WI, Edward, son, born 1898, WI, Nellie, daughter, born 1900, WI. they live hear the Chris Lutz family which is Margaret's sister Zoi's family.

There is no divorce for Charles Spies and Margaret Pigeon Spies found in Marathon Co. from 1900-1905. This was checked by researcher Beth Stahr in 1995 and there was no marriages for Margaret in Marathon Co., for Maggie/margaret Spies in Marathon Co., from 1908-1921

All are single but for Charles, father who is divorced.

In 1910 census, WI, Lincoln Co., Merrill city, 105 Thomas St, ED 60 page 5,or page 253,  census taken April 18, 1910; James Martz, head, age 56, married 7 years, born WI, both parents born PA, works as laborer, Margaret, wife, age 48, born NY, had 15 children 7 living, Harry, step son, age 17, born WI, Francis, step daughter, age 16, born WI, Elsie, daughter, age 5, born WI, Mary E. daughter, age 2 born WI.

In 1916 Merrill, Lincoln Co., WI sity directory shows a James an Margaret Martz living at 609 Grand Ave and later at 609 State St. Also residing there was a Harrison Martz(sp) a laborer. James was a paper mill worker as was John Abrahamson, whose wife's name was Philmenia.

In 1920 census, WI, Lincoln Co., Merrill city, ED 114, page 3b: Margaret Martz is a boarder, she is age 52 widowed, born NY, no occupation, Mary Martz is age 12 and is a boarder. They live in the home of John Abrahamson age 70, born Finland, citizenship-1893 NA, 1909 (?) works day laborer on the city streets.  and his wife Phileman,age 66. Phileman's mother is Canadian French, and there is a stepson of the Abrahamson's, Frank Tauchett, age 28, Frank was born in WI and his Dad is Canadian French and the mother is born in WI.  Possibly the Frank has a tie to the Pigeon family who are Canadian French.

The funeral information from the Merrill WI newspaper, April 12, 1928,for Margaret is as follows: Funeral Friday.  Mrs. Margaret pigeon-Pierson, who died Tuesday morning (about April 10, 1928) of heart trouble at Holy Cross Hospital was born October 18, 1865 and leaves her widower, Henry Pierson, three sons and three daughters, Mrs August( Mary) Kottman, Mrs. Francis Tozier, Mrs. Elsie Englin and Harry, Charles, and Edward Spies. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at the Church of the Ascesion.

Notes for MARY JANE HORTON:

I do not know when Mary's husband and the father of William and Albert Howland passed away but in the 1870 census Mary has remarried and is married to a man named Eli Needham. Eli and Mary appear the same age on the census. The New Lisbon Cemetery Book page 182 has info on Eli's death

In the 1910 census she is living with her son William H. Howland and his family along with Albert her son.  See William's census notes for this information.

The obit of Mary Jane Horton was printed in the New Lisbon, WI paper 2/18/1937. It is as follows.

Mrs. William Howland died at her home in this city, Friday, Feb. 12, 1937, after a long illness. She was 69 years, 2 months and 5 days of age.

Mary Jane Horton was born at Oxford, Marquette Co. WI December 7, 1867. She united in marriage in New Lisbon, WI to William Howland on July 18, 1886. To this union 13 children were born, four of whom died in infancy. This city has been the home of the family with the exception of two years in Necedah, Juneau Co., WI.

Mrs Howland was baptized in August 1913 and became a member of the First Baptist Church of this city_____? before ill health overtook her , attended church frequently. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother. For many years she has been very frail, gradually getting weaker until death summoned her Friday morning. Last July Mr. and Mrs, Howland celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary.

Surviving her are the husband and the following children:  Mrs. Eva Hodge, Camp Douglas, WI; Mrs Nora Hyde, Hiles; Mrs Mae Schwan, Iron Ridge; Mrs Myrtle Wagner, New Lisbon,; Mrs Jessie Mann , Cleveland, OH; Charles Howland, Nekoose; Mrs. Irma Barrett, Camp Douglas; Mrs. Caroline Martin adn John Howland of New Lisbon.  One sister Mrs Mahala Howland, Waukesha; three brothers, John and George Horton of Black Duck, MN, and Willard Horton of NC; 23 grandchildren, and 11 great grand children, besides other relatives and many friends also survive.

Funeral services were held from the home last Monday afternoon at 2 PM and from First Baptist Church at 2:30 PM., Rev. C. I. Peterson, pastor of the church officiating. Burial was made in the New Lisbon, Cem.

Relatives from away who attended the funeral were: Mrs. J. C. Mann of Cleveland, OH; Mr. and Mrs. Nick Hodges, Mrs Cora Madisen, Mr and Mrs Alvin Young, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Barrett Sr. and Mrs. George Barrett, all of Camp Douglas; Mrs Edwin Schwan of Iron Ridge, Mrs ??????

The obituary on Charles Howland which is found in the New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI newspaper had the following obit on September 16, 1959:

Charles Howland Sr. a son of William and Mary Howland was born in New Lisbon, Juneau Co., WI, on May 22, 1902. He attended the New Lisbon Public schools. In 1922 he was untied in marriage to Edith Wright. At the time of his death he was a shareholder and manager of Tri-City Fur Foods, Ins, at WI Rapids and also operated on the areas largest mink ranches. Burial was in Riverside cemetery in Nekoosa, WI. Left to mourn his passing are 1 brother John of Oregon, 5 sisters, Mrs. Charles Wagner of New Lisbon, Mrs. Thomas Barrett and Mrs. N Hodges of Camp Douglas, WI., Mrs Edwin Schwan of Iron Ridge and Caroline Johnson. His parents and 2 sisters preceded him in death.
