A history of the Hammond family, which is
in the file under "Hammond-from Mary
Buchhotz-6-10-97. Some of the
information is contains is:
Charles M. Hammond, stock raiser and agriculturist, residing on section

Faulk Co., SD, and enjoys a wide acquintance and an enviable reputation for
honest and entegrity. He is a native of Mauston, Juneau Co., WI and was born
August 17, 1866.
Charles was the 5th of 8 children and was raised on a farm and attended
the country schools. At the age of sixteen he left home and started for himself.
He went to Sprink County SD in 1882 and worked 2 months by the day in Ashton,
and next went to Elkton and worked at grading on the Chicago, Burlington

on a farm and in 1884 went to Hamlin where he worked on a large wheat farm
until 1885 and then he went to Faulk County and located a homestead on Section
34, township 118 range 67, where he made his home. He and his wife together
had about 6 hundred dollars in money and he paid 440 for a team and 35 dollars
for a cow and purchased a plow, seeder and drag on time. He is noe the possessor
of 326 acres of land. He has pasture of
320 acres and engages mostly in raising cattle and horses. His first
5-6 years in Dakota were devoted to grain raising with little success and
he changed to stock raising. He keeps 19 milk cows and carries about 50 head
of cattle the year round. He lost 5-6 head of cattle during the severe storm
in the winter of 1897. A good well, a windmill attached, furnishes an abundance
of water and facilitiates the work of the place. He residence, erected in

and comfort, and is on of the best in the locality. His barns, one 24x36
feet and one 46x64 feet, comtemplated for the near future, including attached
buildings, are substantial and convenient. The old shanty which served them
the welcome prupose of a home has been converted to a granary. Success has
attended his every effort and he is now one of the well to do farmers in
the township.
Mr. Hammond was married November 14, 1885 to Miss Jennie L. Foster,
a native of Door Co., WI. Mrs. Hammond is the daughter of Abijah and Jane

John McCullum, age 75, was not a traffic fatality, according to Juneau Co.,
WI coroner Clarence Sorenson.
Investigation proved that the injuries suffered by the deceased when
he was struck by a car Tuesday Eve. were not the cause of
death. The Elroy man died in
the Hillsboro Hospital about an hour after being struck by a 1965 Chevrolet
station wagon driven by Bernard Zenner of
Elroy. According to the investigation, Mr. McCullum, wearing
dark clothing stepped from the sidewalk on the east side of Academy St. in
the path of the car. Zenner told authorities that he did not see the man
until it was too late to avoid hitting
him. He sustained some skin
abrasions on the head, left leg and left arm. They appeared to be of minor
nature and the attending Dr. was of the opinion that the man died of a heart
attack that could have been precipitated by the shock and excitement of the
mishap.

Uncle Vernie Skinner told me that Elias Skinner
lived on the Cleaver farm before moving to Elroy. Vernie showed us where
the farm was April 5, 1993. To get to the farm; take Cleaver Road off Hwy
82 (N) by Plymouth Twp. maintence barn. (Juneau Co.,WI) The farm is about
2-3 miles off Hwy 82. Farm is now called HIGH RICE 80 Mike Cleaver Fire #
Twp Plymouth N 4094.
Uncle Vernie Skinner also told me on the same
date that Elias Skinner farmed until about 1918 and then moved to Elroy,
Juneau Co., WI. Elias then worked at the grist mill in Elroy, when he first
moved to Elroy. Elias then went to work for the City of Elroy as Street
Commissioner. About 1934-1935
Elias and Edith Skinner moved out to the Charles Skinner
farm to help Charles on the
farm because Charles was very ill. They lived with Charles for about one
year and then moved back into Elroy.
The 60th Wedding anniversary of Elias and
Edith Skinner was in the Elroy, WI newspaper and is as
follows: "SKINNERS OBSERVE 60TH
ANNIVERSARY---Elroy---An Elroy couple, Mr. and Mrs. Elias Skinner observed
their 60th wedding anniversary quietly at their home on November 12. The
are both life-long residents of the area and were married in the Methodist
parsonage by the Rev. Arthur J.
Coram. After farming for
a number of years, they moved to Elroy in 1921. Mr. Skinner worked for the
city until he retired two years ago, serving as street commissioner part
of the time. The couple has two sons, Cecil of Lindinia and Vernie of Millards
Prairie. Another son, Clarence, died 11 years ago. There are 12 grandchildren
and two great grandchildren." Date of Anniversary was
1953.
In 1955 Elias Celebrated his 85th birthday
and I have a copy of Edith Skinner' writing in which she copied what was
in the newspaper for that special occasion. It is; " Twenty Two help Elias
Skinner celebrate 85th year on Sunday, June 26. Twenty-two relatives and
friends gathered at the home of Elias Skinner to help in celebrate his 85th
birthday. Among them were four generations fo the Skinner family present.
Also present was a friend, Melvin Germason and wife of LaCrosse, whom Mr.
Skinner had not seen for 32 years. A splendid dinner was served including
a beautiful birthday cake in the year--1955."
The obituary of Elias Skinner stated the
following: "ELIAS SKINNER, 90,
