DAVENPORT
-
Douglas B. Davenport, disabled World War II veteran,
who now lives at New Lisbon, was appointed clerk of the circuit court
here yesterday to succeed James D. BURRIS who recently resigned to accept
a civil service job. The appointment was made by Judge Edward J. GEHL of
West Bend, chairman of the state board of circuit judges. "There was a fine
field of applicants and making the decision was difficult." Judge Gehl said
adding that the margin of choice in favor of Davenport was the latter's war
disability.
Other persons interested in the office included Lawrence HYLAND, Vernon WRIGHT
Jr. and Sr., Phyllis LOBENSTEIN, Dick PODRASKY, Andrew KIEFFER and Maree
HOGAN.
The appointment of Davenport was immediately effective
and Burris is remaining until the end of the week to familiarize the new
clerk with the office.

Davenport appears well qualified for a clerk of court.
Born in Superior, he is a graduate of the Eau Claire high school and
Eau Claire teachers college and taught in Eau Claire county for a number
of years. He served eight years with the Eau Claire national guard
unit, the 105th cavalry, and it was while he was at a summer encampment here
that he met his wife, the former Genevieve KEENEY of New Lisbon, who taught
school in Lyndon, Orange and near Necedah. They have a daughter, 8,
who is now going to school in New Lisbon.
Later, Davenport spent six years as a manufacturer's
representative and he and his family were living in Billings, Montana, when
he entered the service.
A replacement with the 28th Division, Davenport was badly
wounded in the drive on Paris. They were on the Seine river when a
German 88 struck an American tank just behind the Wisconsin soldier and he
was hit by shell fragments.
His wounds kept Davenport in army hospitals for 33
months.
Now he has recovered to the extent that he feels capable
of handling the office. He is a courteous, congenial person who should
take well with the Juneau county public. Mauston Star,
