Grand Jury 1864

Janesville Weekly Gazette, Janesville, WI dated 20 May 1864

A company of 100 day men will be raised in Mauston. The Mauston Star says The Grand Jury was very busy, it found no less than six indictments. One against James Herold, Patrick Dore and John Costigan for murder. These parties are accused of killing John A. Thompson, a veteran soldier, in a drunken row in a saloon in this place a few weeks since. The case was, on motion of the defendant, sent to Columbia county for trial.

J. M. Buintual (Brintnall), of Plymouth, was indicted for obtaining money from the State by false pretenses.  The accused has a son in the army, and has drawn the sum of one hundred and ten dollars from the State Treasurey, from the "aid to volunteer" fund, under the pretense that he was poor and depended upon his enlisted son for support; when in fact, as is charged, he was well of, had plenty of property and is not dependant upon his son or anybody else.  The matter was settled and a nolle prosequi entered by the defendant repaying the money he had received.

The trial of George Salter, of Clearfield, who was indicted last term for killing an Indian, was continued, the prosecution not being ready for trial on account of the absence of witnesses.
