Chapter Profile

Grant County Genealogical Society held their initial meeting December 12, 1974. The first year ended with 31 members and we currently have 370 with our year ending April 30. The society meets every second Tuesday evening alternating between Lancaster and Platteville with the exception of December.

Our Grant County Heritage quarterly newsletter is published in February, May, August and November. Our society has copied the Grant County cemeteries and have arranged the names alphabetically by surname on 3x5 cards. We have made a map of the "Grant County Cemeteries and Locations" that is included with the new membership packet. We charge $3.00 per surname to check the cards and send the cemetery information. This file is continually updated by our Cemetery Chairperson. Send check and SASE to Helen Jentz, 955 Williams St., Platteville, WI 53818.

We have published the book, Grant County Genealogical Society Surname Index, Volume I, covering our members' ancestral charts from 1976 through April 1989. The second edition, Grant County Genealogical Society Surname Index, Volume II, covering ancestral charts from May 1989 through April 1993, is also available.

Our society has a library which contains family genealogies, history books, maps of foreign countries, newsletters from other societies, indexed scrapbooks, any books our society has published, and other books pertaining to Grant County or genealogy. A complete list is available at each of our meetings and materials may be checked out from the Library Chairperson.

We have been diligently working on indexing the marriages for Grant County. We now have 13 volumes published. See the Publication List for the listings.

Our group is very active and vivacious. Members that cannot attend meetings and help with the local project collect obituaries and other articles that have Grant County roots and send the information. We include these articles in our scrapbooks. Thanks is extended to each and every one of our members. Without them, our society could not exist.
