GOTTFRIED HESS, wagon manufacturer; was born in Prussia, Germany, in 1824; he came to the United States in 1850; he lived a few months in Pittsburgh, Penn., thence to Milwaukee, where he lived till the spring of 1851, when he came to Grant Co. Mr. Hess entered the Prussian army in 1846, and served about four years; he enlisted Jan. 11, 1865, in the 44th W. V. I., and served until the close of the war; he was a non-commissioned officer in both the Prussian and Union armies. He was married to Lucinda Schree, born in Pennsylvania in 1834; they have four children - Lucelia, George, Etta and Ellen.
