LEIBFRIED

Jim Leibfried Tue Feb 27 2001 2:47 pm
The homearea in Bavaria of my Ggrandfather was unknown to his descendants. Now Fr. Ron Lange has learned it was Eichenbuehl, near Miltenberg, about 60 miles north of Stuttgart. With this new info. I was quickly able via the internet to find the names, addresses and phone nos. of about ten Leibfrieds still living in that immediate area. I'm now in the process of contacting them.

There are a great number of George's descendants living in the Potosi area and this should be of great interest to a number of them. (George and his wife, Maria Theresia are buried in the old St. Andrews cemetary in Tennyson). I was going to post this on the query board but it is currently not open. Thank you, Jim Leibfried

LEMKE, PODHOLA

Mary Ferreter Sun Feb 04 2001 10:33 am
I have ancestors by the name of Joseph Podhola and Matilda Lemke who lived in Grant County around 1880. Their children, John Podhola, Margaret Mary Podhola, George Podhola, Marcella Podhola and Elmer Podhola were all born in Grant County. The first three children were born in Castle Rock, near Muscoda, and the last 2 were born in Highland. I don't know much about Joseph and Matilda. Would greatly appreciate finding someone who might know something about them.

WILLIAMS, WOODMAN

Bruce B. Miller Fri Feb 02 2001 10:05 am
Seek to correspond with WOODMAN researchers in Grant Co. Charles WOODMAN arrived in Grant Co. in about 1849 with his family. I have reviewed the 1850 census for the WOODMAN family but it is hard to read the names. I am in the process of finding the index for the Wisconsin census for 1860 and 1870 in order to search for the WOODMAN family. We have the census records available but do not have the index. Charles WOODMAN'S mother was suppose to be an Indian from Canada, whose mother was Rippling Water. Charles WOODMAN was a veteran of the Civil War and I have obtained his pension file. He married Mary Elizabeth Williams in grant Co. in 1867.

CARMODY, DONLIN, POWERS

Dan Jensen Wed Jan 31 2001 1:56 am
Michael Patrick DONLIN moved from Springfield, MA sometime after the Civil War to Lancaster, Grant Count, WI, with his wife Bridget CARMODY and son James. Michael and Bridget were both born in County Clare, Ireland. After having five more children, Bridget died on 3 April 1877, at age 37. Michael remarried on Christmas Eve of that year to Delia H POWERS, who had been born in Troy, NY in about 1860. Delia's parents, Michael and Brigetta Alice POWERS, were Irish Catholic immigrants. It may be that Delia lived with Elizabeth POWERS, perhaps her stepmother, when she married Michael. They moved to Plymouth County, IA in October 1879 after having had their first child together.

Thank you,
Dan Jensen

BLAUFUSS, BREHM

Gary Schmidtke Sat Jan 27 2001 7:01 pm
I am researching two familys that immigrated from Saxony to the United States in 1846 (per 1900 census). I believe that both families traveled together on the same ship and settled in the Lancaster area.

Family Number 1:

Henry BREHM
b. 1792 in Saxony and listed on the census for 1850 in Highland Township, Grant County, Wisconsin page 172A. Between 1850 and 1860 he moved and is listed on the 1860 census in Town of Liberty Township, Grant County, Wisconsin page 379. In the early 1860's he moved out of Grant County, Wisconsin and relocated in Bremer County, Iowa per the 1870 census. His occupation is listed on the census as a blacksmith.

Dorothy (UNKNOWN) BREHM
b. 1798 in Saxony, wife of Henry Brehm and listed on the census for 1850 in Highland Township, Grant County, Wisconsin page 172A. Between 1850 and 1860 she moved and is listed on the 1860 census in Town of Liberty Township, Grant County, Wisconsin page 379. In the early 1860's she moved out of Grant County, Wisconsin and relocated in Bremer County, Iowa per the 1870 census. Her occupation is listed on the census as keeping house.

Magdalena BREHM
b. May 18, 1825 in Saxony, daughter of Henry and Dorothy Brehm and listed on the census for 1850 in Highland Township, Grant County, Wisconsin page 172A.

Family Number 2:

Johan August BLAUFUSS
b. August 24, 1819 in Saxony and listed on the census for 1850 in Highland Township, Grant County, Wisconsin page 172A. Between 1850 and 1860 he moved and is listed on the 1860 census in Town of Liberty Township, Grant County, Wisconsin page 379. In the early 1860's he moved out of Grant County, Wisconsin and relocated in Bremer County, Iowa per the 1870 census. His occupation is listed on the census as farmer.

On November 8, 1846 Johan August Blaufuss married Magdalena Brehm in Lancaster, Grant County, Wisconsin with marrage license recorded in Sp., Vol. A, Pg. 37.

On February 10, 1848 he purchased two tracts of land from the BLM with recordings being made in Mineral Point, Wisconsin.

I do not believe that Johan ever went by his first name as most references are to August Blaufuss with his first name missing.

In the Grant County book the only reference that I could find to ether of this families was an August ( I don't remember the exact spelling ) Blaufuss. He was listed as as being on the board of supervisors for Grant County in 1855. They may not be the same person. The name Blaufuss I have found spelled every which way on documents. If someone has the Grant County book could you look up these names for me I would appreciate it very much. I only had a brief look at it at the Clayton Library in Houston the last time I was there.

Johan August Blaufuss and Magdalena Brehm had the following children in Grant County:

Frederick Christian BLAUFUSS
b. March 17, 1849

Elizabeth BLAUFUSS
b.March 21, 1851

Mathilda BLAUFUSS
b. February 16, 1855

Henry August BLAUFUSS
b. August 17, 1858

Children born in Brehmer County, Iowa:

Ida BLAUFUSS
b. 1862

Emma Emilie BLAUFUSS
b. 1866

The above six children I can locate but there is listed on the 1900 census a total count of children at nine. There is a possability that there could have been three that were stillborn or died at a very young age. This could have taken place in Grant County, Wisconsin or Brehmer County, Iowa.

If anyone has any information on ether of these families please let me know.

PRATT, SCHERMERHORN

Thomas Edmund Peter Randall Tue Jan 16 2001 4:42 pm
I have submitted to your Grant County Genealogical Society for cemetery records for Daniel and Sarah Schermerhorn. They moved to your county around 1871. I have primary evidence for this: His War of 1812 pension application says they were both residents Platteville on 10MAR1871at that time, quite possibly with their daughter, Imogene, who married Delando Pratt. We Schermerhorn descendants are compiling a centennial edition of our 1914 family history. Any information about Daniel, Sarah, Imogene or Delando's lives is welcome. I am contributing the branch of this family which starts with Daniel's father, Revolutionary War veteran Jacob H. Schermerhorn of Schodack, Rensselaer, and later Deerfield, Montgomery, NY.

BEHRENS, HALLENBERG, JULIUS, OTTEMEIER

Beverly J. Behrens Miller Mon Jan 15 2001 11:46 pm
My name is BEVERLY J. BEHRENS MILLER and I reside in Rapid City, SD. I am looking for information on my ancestors: (JOHN BERNARD) LUDWIG CARL JULIUS who came to the U.S. about 1850. His wife's name was CATHERINE. Accompanying them were their five children. They settled in Liberty Township, Grant County, Wisconsin, which is southwest of Stitzer. At some point they moved to Stitzer and became members of the Methodist Church in Stitzer. Some of my information says that the first wedding in that church was performed by the Rev. H. Wiethorn for HEINRICH OTTEMEIER AND SOPHIA JULIUS on November 17, 1861. One of the sons, HENRY JULIUS brought his future wife, ANNE GERTRUDE HALLENBERG, from Germany. They were married on December 14, 1870. At some point they moved from Stitzer, but cannot find records of where they moved to. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Beverly J. Miller

BELLAN, DAPPRONE, DU CHARME, FRASCETTE, GAUTIER, GOKEY, LA COUNTE, MALLETTE, MORDEAUX, PARENTEAU, POLANDER, RUBIDEAUX, TOULOOSE, WILMOT, WILMOTT

Brian Christensen Sun Jan 14 2001 2:53 am
I am curious about the French-Canadian origins of several settlers of Grant County. My relative Judge Edward Wilmott wrote articles about men of Grant County. I have had no luck tracing my Wilmot ancestry into Canada. I believe some of the men mentioned in Judge Wilmott's papers may have immigrated to the US with my family. Is anyone familar with the following men?

"With the Potosi Pioneers" by Judge Edward Wilmott
November 24, 1920

"Among the early arrivals to the lead mines were a number of French people. Among them were the Jefferson Touloose, Francis Bellan, Guion Gautier, Cornique Dapprone and Rubideaux families, Pascal and Louis Mallette families, Alexander du Charme and family, Isaac Wilmott, Moses Frescette, Martin Parenteau, Joseph Polander, Francis Mordeaux, Louis Gokey, Moses La Counte and others whose names we are unable to recall. Many of these died in Potosi. E. M. Wilmott is the only descendant of the French pioneers now living in Potosi."

FOSTER, KLARMAN, MILLARD, VANVICKLE

Brian Christensen Sun Jan 14 2001 2:44 am
Who was the father of MILLARD VANVICKLE of Grant County? The 1860 census of Grant Co. showed Millard VANVICKLE, age 3, next to Austus VANVICKLE, age 21. They were living with Austus' sister Jemima VanVickle FOSTER, wife of John FOSTER.

On March 17, 1864 Austus married Charles KLARMAN. Did Austus have a child out of wedlock with a Mr. MILLARD? Were there MILLARDS in Grant County during this time?
