The following reminiscences are taken from
the 1880 history of Fond du Lac county, and show in detail, some of the
trials and tribulations of early Fond du Lac settlement.
Samuel A. Storrow, 1817 pps 351-353. This story describes his journey in the winter of 1817, as he walks from Green Bay to Chicago, and his encountering the village of "Fals Avoines" [Menomonees; now Village of Calumet] and the reception he received there from the Indian settlement there. Henry S. Baird 1859 p 354. A brief description of the trading post and Indian tribe locations in 1824. Henry Merrell p 354. A description of his journey, starting in March 1836, from Portage to Sheboygan. He describes the stop in Fond du Lac, where he found one inhabitant named Follet. Ebenezer Childs 1858 pps 354-355. A brief description of a journey to Green Bay, and his encounter with two Indians. D P Mapes 1870 pps 355-358. Gustave de Neveu 1875 pps 358-365. A very thorough description of his settlement in the county, what life was like, and the names of other settlers who were in the area at the time.
