Pickups by a Crank.
School commenced Monday for the spring term.
There is being built a telephone line from Portage to Baraboo.
The village schools in Rio are closed on account of scarlet fever.
Mr. And Mrs. Frank Alford went to Kingston yesterday for a few days' visit.
Chas. Fosgate has moved to Portage and will reside on East Conant street.
Frank Baillies had the luck to kill two wild geese at one shot Wednesday evening.
This office had a call from Henry Sawyer, one of the pioneer settlers of Scott, Tuesday.
Dr. Wm. Meacher is reported not as well as usual and appears to be gradually on the decline.
Poynette voted on the license question yesterday. No license has been in force there for several years.
The portrait in our next issue will be of Mr. Killian Hepler, who built the third dwelling in Pardeeville.
The whistle of Williams & Grover's factory is now heard every day. They have large building contracts on hand.
Wyocena voted "no license" yesterday.
Charles Devendorf returned from Milwaukee the latter part of last week.
Henry Kuhene, of Cambria, has hired Williams & Grover for the season.
A select party was given at Will Achterberg's last Friday evening in honor of his sister, Miss Emma.
A small child of Mr. And Mrs. Will Horton, of the town of Wyocena, passed away this morning about 3 o'clock.
Dr. Byron Meacher performed a successful surgical operation on Mrs. Geo. Keech yesterday, removing two tumors.
John Roberts, Claude Briffett, Asa Williams, Fred Wheeler and Wesley Gilbert left for Rio Monday to work in a tobacco barn at that place.
A.S. Riley and P.J. McKay departed Monday for Waterloo to attend to their nursery business there. They are having an immense call for their stock.
Lewis Sawyer has declined the nomination on the Republican ticket for mayor of Columbus and D.S. Fuller has been placed on the ticket to fill the vacancy.
Word from Nashville April 4 says that "our Claude" [Elliott] was one of the five successful pitchers selected out of twelve who were signed by the Detroit team for trial.
Mrs. Chas. Spear, of Wyocena, mother of R.O. Spear, has been quite sick for some days. She is 81 years old, which makes the chances for her complete recovery doubtful.
Williams & Grover entered into contracts yesterday to build a parsonage about six miles north of Pardeeville and a residence for Warren Gilbert in the town of Lowville. They will have all the work they can do with ten or twelve men.
Mrs. Fuller is to build a fine residence soon, having bought a lot of M.G. Tucker just east of his residence.
Pardeeville has twenty-seven business houses, three hotels, three barber shops, two newspapers, two photograph galleries, three blacksmith shops, one wagon shop, one wood-working shop, two livery stables, an electric light plant, a creamery, a large cold-storage warehouse and one of the best lumber yards in the state.
L.J. Tucker arrived her Monday for a short vacation. He will return in about ten days to take up his duties as principal of the schools at Downing, St. Croix county. Louis is an example of the many enterprising young men who by their commendable pluck, energy and adaptability it has been the good fortune of Pardeeville to send forth into the world to further the cause of education, and our citizens feel a pardonable pride in the success which they invariably attain.
The entire Union ticket was elected in Wyocena except the clerk, J.H. Marston, on the Town ticket, being elected to that office. The entire vote polled was 256, of which J.M. Bushnell received 164 for chairman and C.W. Gorman 88. The ticket as elected follows: Chairman, J.M. Bushnell; supervisors, L.J. Vradenburg, Daniel Smith; clerk, J.H. Marston; treasurer, C.E. Patchin; assessor, J.W. Charmley; justices of the peace, M.E. Twitchell, Fred Scott, W.B. Allegar; constables, C. Stroud, J.C. Gorman, John Pierce; ballot clerks, S.F. Wood, F.N. Phillips.
The entire Tax-Payers' ticket won in the war of ballots yesterday. Fifty-three straight Tax-Payers' and twenty-one straight Union tickets were polled. The whole number of votes cast was 144, of which Hughes received 81 and Chandler 57, for president. The ticket as elected is as follows: President, Wm. Hughes; trustees, R.O. Spear, C.H. Carleton, Ellsworth Grover, D.T. Lynch, Martin Dean, D.S. Heath; supervisor, E.P. Ashley; assessor, Trueman Robbins; treasurer, Nelson Alford; clerk, L.P. Ashley; marshal, L.C. Crump; justice of the peace, F.A. Mathewson; police justice, Bert Force; constable, Thos. Miller; ballot clerks, Frank Alford, Thos. Baillies.

C.H. Williams and wife visited in the town of Scott Sunday.
Mrs. And Mrs. F.L Carpenter were Portage callers Thursday.
Miss Mazie Smith is reported very sick at this writing (Monday).
H.D. Britt, of Wyocena, was a caller at the The Crank rendezvous yesterday.
Peter Williams, of Cambria, was in town last Saturday on insurance business.
Mr. And Mrs. H.M. Thomas, of Scott, visited at Thos. Baillies' last Sunday.
The Misses Mary Wendt and Emma Achterberg called on Rio friends last Wednesday.
Mrs. Frank Haskin left for Milwaukee Monday for a short visit. She returns today.
The J.W. Slowey family departed for Montello Monday, where Mr. Slowey has leased a hotel.
Mrs. Thomas Baillies has been on the sick list for the past few days, but is now somewhat better.
Clyde Simmons has been canvassing the past few days for Hall's teakettle covers with good success.
Mrs. Regina Flitcroft, who has been visiting relatives here, intends leaving for her home in Reedsburg tomorrow.
Robert Wilson dropped into our office on election day and left his name upon our subscription book. Thanks, Bob.
Mrs. H.E. Spear, who has been in Milwaukee the past winter receiving medical treatment, came home last Thursday.
James Herreman and wife, of Marcellon, called at The Crank office this morning. Jim and this "crank" used to attend school together. Call again, old boy.
C.F. Fuller, of Westfield, stopped off here from Saturday until Monday. He had been to Dartford on Marquette county business, he being register of deeds of that county.
Mrs. W.G. Robinson of Poynette, and her daughter, Mrs. J.E. Shirk, of Glenwood, drove over from Poynette last Wednesday for a visit with Mrs. G.W. Dusenbury. They also went to Cambria for a call on friends before returning home.

SWAN LAKE

Eli Devendorf was seen one day last week marching on the boulevard with his knapsack on his back and a chip on his shoulder, headed for Cuba. Good-bye, Dad.
Mr. Tradewell will remove to Portage this week.
Mr. Marston visited in Wyocena last Sunday.
James Marston is at home from Minnesota.
Chas. Groth and his mother and sister went to Portage last Sunday.
Wm. Riley, of Portage, was here on Monday looking after his farm.
George Pegg and mother visited relatives in the eastern part of the town last Sunday.

WYOCENA
Frank Stanley was home over Sunday. He is attending school at Poynette.
Miss Mina Thompson, of Rio, was a visitor at Wm. Hill's Sunday.
Gene Austin was up from Columbus and stayed over Sunday.
Mrs. A.W. English and children expect to visit New York this summer.
It is said that D. Wheeler has rented his barber shop in this place to Frank Kennedy and is running a shop in Poynette.
Miss Leona Weiting was at home from Saturday until Monday from Stevens Point, where she is attending school.

NORTH SCOTT
August and Charlie Bobholz have each purchased a new bicycle.
Miss Carrie Morley, who has spent the winter with her grandmother in Friendship, is now visiting her mother, Mrs. Aaron Payne.
Albert Haskey, of Beaver Dam, is sojourning in our neighborhood.
Joseph Burton and Aaron Payne visited friends and relatives near Baraboo, returning home with a load of oats.
George Stone and wife visited her father and mother, Mr. And Mrs. Hathaway, last Sunday.
Mrs. Burton, of Montello, is spending a few days with her brother-in-law, Joseph Burton.
Miss Allie Keech, of Lewiston, is visiting her sister, Mrs. John Haskey.
John Murphy, of Kingston, has been seen on our streets lately. What is the attraction, John?

Miss Lou Rolleston is moving her stock of millinery goods into the store on Cook street recently vacated by the Carnegie Music company.

NORTH SPRINGVALE
Mrs. Heft, mother of Wm. Heft, is seriously ill at this writing.
Mrs. Robt. King, of Cambria, and niece, Anna, spent Friday and Saturday at Mr. Hartman's.
Miss Lizzie Thomas is engaged to teach in the Russell district for the coming summer term.
C. Cease gave a graphophone entertainment at the "slab" school-house Friday evening.
Mr. And Mrs. John Thomas visited friends and relatives here last week.
Chas. Gardner is slowly improving from his recent injuries.
Dudley Damp and Miss Winnie Thomas contemplate attending school at Pardeeville this summer.
W.H. Perry, of Portage, passed through here Friday buying horses.
Chris. Stollfus and family spent Sunday last with their daughter, Mrs. Fred Shave.
Richard Kuhn is working for Geo. Heath.
Jasper Eggleston has moved on to a farm in the town of Buffalo.
D.M. Thomas has purchased an $80 buggy of Edwin Davies, of Cambria.

MARCELLON
McElroy Bros. Have been sawing wood in this vicinity - this week.

Lizzie Hanson is in Pardeeville.
Dan Mallon, of Bellefountain, will build a large barn. Henry Lobdell will boss the job.
Mike Egan is at work on the Wiley farm.
Chas. Thurber, of Ft. Winnebago, is a work on the Meacher farm.
Mark Barden is doing well as could be expected.
Miss Meda Brown will teach the Stancer School this summer and Susie West at Pigeon Grove.
Mrs. Morrison is at home for the summer. She spent the winter with her daughter, Mrs. Ramsey, at Babcock.
Louis Day starts for Waupun Monday to work for his uncle.

SOUTH SCOTT
M. Thomas visited the county seat Saturday. Rumor says he has sold his farm.
Messrs. Jones and Kelly, of Portage, were through here Monday in the interests of the Plano harvester.
Frank Baillies killed two wild geese at one shot last week.
Mark Barden Jr., is improving. He is able to walk about the house.
John Cunningham, Sea., is building an addition to his house. C.P. Tripp is the boss workman.
Mrs. R. Deakin is to build an 18x26 brick house this spring.
