Norris Cemetery

Many of my ancestors are buried in this cemetery.  Among them are my grandparents, Charles and Anna (Flom) Norris; his father, Daniel Newton Norris, and his mother, Songe Kishing Go-Quay.  She was of Ojibway (Chippewa) ancestry and many of her siblings and their families are believed buried there also. (The name Songe Kishing Go-Quay is Chippewa language and Quay means woman.  It translates into "Strong Skies Woman.") 

Charles Wesley Norris, brother of Daniel Newton Norris, is buried there as well as his son, Walter Norris, and his first wife, Lucy, and some of his family.  Charles Wesley Norris was a Civil War veteran. 

Roland Winslow "Duck" Deering is believed to be the first person buried in this cemetery.  He had come with his family from Pennsylvania and was a surveyor.  Charles "Manny" Norris is believed to be the last person buried in this cemetery.

Besides those listed of the marked graves in this cemetery, there are nineteen unmarked graves within the cemetery itself. Many years ago when I visited the cemetery there were also some graves outside the fenced in perimeter but those graves are now no longer visible. I am sure there are many Indians buried in and around this cemetery who are distant relatives of mine through my great-grandmother, Soonge Kishing Go-Quay.
