HANNON, TOM

OBITUARY

Accidental Drowning

Last Saturday, three of the men at work at the quarry on Bass Island came over to this place, and succeeded in getting petty heavily loaded with 'tanglefoot' before they started to return, in the evening. About four o'clock next morning one of them drifted ashore at the island, clinging to the boat, nearly exhausted, but two of them, named Ja's Gallagher and TOM HANNON, were not to be found, and had evidently found a watery grave. Their bodies have not been found yet, though search was made. They came here but a short time ago, from Cleveland, to work on the quarry, but whisky was too much for them.

HAYWARD, Albert Curtis

Posted By:Donna Bell Cross

Date: Friday, 12 November 1999, at 8:52:47 a.m.

HAYWARD-At his late residence in this illage, Tuesday, April 10, 1888, ALBERT CURTIS HAYWARD, aged sixty years, 1 month and two days. Cause of death, paralysis of brain.

Again has the Grim Reaper entered our midst and suddenly removed to that land "just over there" a model husband, parent and citizen. Mr. Hayward was among the early settlers on this lake and had resided in Bayfield for almost seventeen years, where he occupied many important offices of honor and trust. Probably there is no man in the community who has fewer enemies than had A.C. Hayward. He was universally respected and admired for his "every day walk and conversation," and his departure leaves a vacancy in our midst that time cannot fill. His illness was of brief duration, and his death painless. He leaves a wife and one child, Mrs. F.B. Dunbar, who have the sympathy of all in their hour of affliction. Funeral services were held at the residence Thursday morning, conducted by Rev. Moran of the Episcopal church, and his remains were taken to Ashland in charge of the Masonic lodge of this place, of which he was a respected member, and there interred. "Requiescat in pace." OBITUARY - LETITIA BYAN HOBBS
Death Claims Mrs. Hobbs.

Mrs. Letitia Bryan Hobbs, aged 61 years, seven months, and twenty-three days, passed from this life at her home in this city Monday evening, May 18th, at 9:15 o'clock, after a few months' illness with internal cancer.

She was born in Milwaukee on Sept. 25, 1863, and her early childhood was spent in that city until her parents moved when whe was about five years of age to Bangor, Wis. There she attended school, graduated and for three years taught school, after which she continued in the teaching profession at Oshkosh and Onalaska.

She was married on June 2nd, 1886, to Charles S. Hobbs and lived in Onalaska for two years. In the fall of 1890 the family moved to Iron River which has since been their permanent residence. Mr. Hobbs conducted a livery, operated a farm, did some logging, and also served as school clerk and town chairman, and held the latter office when he died quite suddenly on the 21st day of July, 1912. He was serving his eighth consecutive term as chairman at the time of his death.

To this union one daughter and six sons were born and survive, namely: Mrs. Nellrae Machon, of Crosby, Minn.; Delbert and Howard, of Superior; Douglas, of Cloquet, Minn.; Jay, of Detroit, Mich., and Charles and Donald, of this city.

Mrs. Hobbs' health began to show signs of impairment a few months ago. She suspected that her trouble was internal cancer and that is what it proved to be. An explorative operation, under which she went several weeks ago, revealed that, and also that the dread disease had made such progress that nothing further could be done for her, and her decline came rapidly.

The deceased was most higly respected and esteemed by all. She was a devoted mother, a talented singer, and an active worker in the Congegational Church at Bangor, Wis., and had it not been for her illness she would doubtless have united with the local Congregational Church last Easter.

Mrs. Hobs will be greatly missed by a large circle of devoted friends, and the family, upon whom the loss is naturally felt the keenest, have the sympathy of all.

The funeral is being held this afternoon from the Congretional Church and the services are being conducted by the pastor, Rev. Arthur G. Young. The one voice in the choir that will be greatly missed will be that now silenced by the hand of death. The pall-bearers are the six sons of the deceased.

Besides the children the deceased is survived by one sister, Mrs. Frank Graves, of Viroqua, Wis., and two brothers, Dr. E. H. Bryan of Huron, S.D., and Robert H. Bryan, of Berlin, Mass. Mrs. Graves and Dr. Bryan are among the relatives from out of town, who are here to attend the funeral.
