Bayfield County Journal Yesteryear Column
| |
Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

District Attorney Shea, Sheriff Gonyon and Captain Murphy were
among our Bayfield callers this week. (Remember, during this time, the
County Seat was in Bayfield.) Messrs. Flynn and (Billy) Burns will open up
in grand style in their new block, opposite the Hotel Washburn, about April
1 5. (Three years later they went out in grand style after Peter Nelsons
horse kicked over a lantern and started the Great Washburn Fire of 1888.
Almost the entire block across from Legion park went up in flames. It was
reported that the firemen, all 7-8 of them, had about as much trouble with
the drunks and looters as they did with the blazing inferno. Peter Nelsons
barn was around where the book store is now or where the Washburn Times used
to be on Central Avenue.) About 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening the dwelling of
James McGulgan was burned to the ground and the loss was $2,500. (The Bee
said this was the first house built in Washburn and was also the first hotel
here.)
