Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec. 3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the web".

Iron River Memories

At the ripe old age of 91 years, Byron Ripley, a resident of Iron River for half a century, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Iver Carlson, in Duluth. Byron was born in Brockville, Ontario, in 1850, and came to the states at age 18, first to Ohio, then Michigan, then back to the study of law for four years, then to Aberdeen, South Dakota, where he operated a hotel. He then came to Superior and operated a hotel there. Then he finally settled in Iron River, where he was a banker for 20 years and also worked in real estate and insurance. The funeral will be Saturday afternoon in the Congregational Church.

Last Saturday evening a party of Iron River, Ashland and Brule boys and girls, and Frank, Stowell, age 44, chauffeur for Mrs. Joseph Davies of Washington, D.C., were riding from Brule to the Davies cottage on the Brule River in a motorized vehicle called a "station wagon" with James Dennis, age 18, of Brule, at the wheel. The station wagon overturned on County Trunk H a mile south of Brule, and injured three of the occupants enough as to need treatment at the hospital. They were taken to St. Francis hospital, Superior, and included Ann Thompson, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Thompson of this city, and Barbara Emerson, 17, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A.C. Emerson, of this city. Dennis Starr of Brule was the third injured to be taken to the hospital. Robert Preston, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Preston of Indianhead Lodge, was not taken to the hospital that night but his parents took him the next day, and he was found to have three broken ribs. Ann suffered a fracture of her right arm, Barbara had external head injuries. Marge and Marion Lindgren, twins of Ashland, received minor injuries and were cared for by their family.

Arrangements are moving forward for the annual Boy Scout Camporee of Gitche Gumee Council to be held near Iron River at Lake Ruth. Over 600 Boy Scouts are expected to attend. The following committeemen have been named: Nels Nelson of Iron River, facilities; Art Kingsbury, Ashland, health and sanitation; John B. Chapple, Ashland, campfire. Several local men and boys who have been prominent in past camporees will be conspicuous by their absence this year, nearly all caused by the country needing them in then armed forces; namely, Berkeley Wells, William Vacha, Phillip Nelson and Richard Ingle.

Vernon DeFoe, age 27 years, a resident of Red Cliff, was killed last Monday during an electrical storm. He was working on a new extension of a dock at Bayfield Harbor, and was engaged in dumping a truckload of rock when lightning struck him and knocked him into the bay. His body was recovered about 40 minutes later. Mr. DeFoe is survived by his wife and three small children.

Specialist 4 Merwin L. Shulstad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Shulstad of Iron River, was selected soldier of the month for May at Ft. Belvoir, Va. SP4 Shulstad is a member of the Headquarters Group 588th Engineer Battalion. A personnel specialist, he entered the Army in July 1958 after his graduation from Columbia High School in Iron River.

Miss Judy Moran, daughter of John Moran of Iron River and Pearl DeGiacinto of Herbster, will graduate from Superior State Teachers College June 8. She will receive her bachelor of science degree. Miss Moran has been a member of Tau Alpha Chi sorority. She has accepted a position as first grade teacher at Lincoln School, Superior.

The Chequamegon Stock Car Racing Association will open the racing season May 30, 1960. Approximately 35 cars will compete on opening day. The admission is 90 cents for adults and children 12 years and under are free. Harry "Luke" McLean will be driving number 142 in the Memorial Day races. This is the 1950 Oldsmobile he raced last year at Proctor. Luke�s sponsors are Kesler�s Uptown Mobil Station and Fuhrmann�s Sausage and Locker Plant.

Mrs. Fenella Andre flew via Northwest Orient from Seattle and arrived in Iron River Monday evening to attend the funeral of her brother, Edward Daniels. She will visit for a week at the home of James and Bernice Moran.

Maynard Clark spent several days in a Minneapolis hospital, where he had an ear operation.

In the Badger-Gopher Conference meet held at Sheboygan, Kenneth Maki got first place in the mile run and placed second in the 2-mile run. Kenneth is a sophomore at Northland College, Ashland, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Einard Maki.

A prenuptial shower was held Friday night at the REA building honoring Miss Judy Fuhrmann, who will become the bride of Jerry Darwin June 25. Hostesses were Nancy McLean, Leila Hoefling, Roberta DeNagel, Gloria Sajdak and Fran Mitchell.

Clayton Haus and family of Hibbing, and James Haus and family of Ashland, visited their father, J.B. Haus, and brother, Boyd.

Edward G. Daniels, 55, formerly of Iron River, died Friday, May 20, in Chicago. He was born and raised in Iron River.
