Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Iron River Memories

A business deal of considerable importance occurred here on Monday, when
the cheese factory property of John Fuhrmann, located in the Town of Tripp,
was sold to Arnold C. Fuhrmann and wife, Mabel I. Fuhrmann, of Kerrick, Pine
County, Minn. John A. Fuhrmann has leased back from the new owners, the
store compartment, feed shed and gas pumps for a term of three years.
The Town of Iron River has considerable debts, many of them outstanding,
and the Town Board decided, after conferring with state officials, that it
would be much to the town�s advantage to have the town refinanced through
the state�s facilities for handling loans of this nature than to have many
loose strings attached to its financial structure. So on Monday, the Town
Board, consisting of Town Chairman J.L. MacRae, Supervisors Ole Olson and
A.G.. Johnson, Clerk Ralph Mellon, and L.H. Merrihew, School Superintendent,
went down to Madison and spoke with the Governors of the State Trust� Fund�
and their trip has been reported as very successful.
Mr. Norman Shulstad, of this city,� has been hired to fill the vacancy
created by Myron Harbour�s leaving the Iron River Schools. No one has been
employed to fill the vacancy caused by Miss Claus being incapacitated by
injury in an auto accident.
Mrs. Leola Petterson and son, Jim, have been visiting here at the home of
her mother, Mrs. Alice Mellon.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Coats and daughters, Myrtle and Betty, motored up from
Burnips, Mich., last week. Myrtle is returning to teach in our schools
again.
Mr. and Mrs. Clark Pedersen and son of Soldiers Grove, Wis., were here over
the weekend visiting relatives and friends and taking in the county fair.
Miss Lois Kennedy, graduate nurse, is� home on a visit. Lois, who graduated
last spring, is now pursuing her profession at Joliet, Ill.
Now playing at the Rex Theater -- �Philadelphia Story� with Katherine
Hepburn, James Stewart and Gary Grant; Coming -- �Maisie Was a Lady�
starring Ann Southern� and Lew Ayres.
The regular practice of the Iron River Community Band was held on Monday.
Three new members were added, bringing the total to 25. There will be a
special practice for individuals at 6:30 p.m. The entire band will practice
at 7 p.m.
August 27, 1959
Mrs. Julia Blair, 66, Iron River, died at an Ashland hospital Monday. Mrs.
Blair was born in Iron River October 20, 1893, and attended school here. She
married Charles Blair and lived for many years at L�Anse, Mich., prior to
returning here. She was an
operator at the Iron River Telephone Company. Before her marriage she
clerked at Kelly�s Grocery in Superior, and for a short time operated a
restaurant in Brule. She was a member of St. Michael�s Church and its Altar
and Rosary Society. Mr. Blair died 10 years ago. Surviving are two sisters,
Miss Catherine O�Brien, Superior, and Miss Alyce
O�Brien, Iron River; and two brothers, George and Frank O�Brien, Superior;
and nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held this morning at St.
Michael�s Church with Rev. Joe Kleinheinz officiating. Pallbearers were:
Tony Stromko, Adolph Dahl, John Wisley, Henry Smith, Berkeley Wells, Dick
Johnson.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Moran announce the birth of a daughter, Jody Marie,
Aug. 15th. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. William Pero and Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Moran. This is their first child.
The 1959 Bayfield County Fair closed Sunday night after setting new
records. Six thousand exhibits, 500 more than last year, displayed the
agricultural and artistic achievements of Bayfield County folks. Opening day
set a record day for attendance with
over 2,000. Sunday brought out over 5,000 and the grandstand was packed to
capacity for the 4-H parade and the rodeo. The Town of Cable won the blue
ribbon for the farm booth.
