Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Iron River Memories

Local area residents called for jury duty include: Aaron Kivisto, Oscar
Rankison, Fred Carter, Charles Frankie, E.W. Johnson, Paul Howstrawser, John
Saari, Nettie Johnson.
During a brief storm last Thursday, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kennedy
was struck by lightning and a linoleum was completely ruined and some papers
caught on fire, which Mrs. Kennedy promptly found and extinguished. Other
homes in the neighborhood also sustained radio (sic) damage. Chairman John
Shykes of the Town of Tripp reported that two of his dairy cows were killed
outright in the pasture, in an open field.
After a three week vacation, Miss Lois Kennedy returned Sunday to Gary,
Ind., where she will start work as a supervisor of nursing at St. Mary�s
Mercy Hospital.
The Mineau Motor Company Store front is being modernized and Mr. Mineau is
having his residence repaired and improved by having it covered with
waterproof rock sheets over a heavy tar insulation paper. The improvement
will not only make the home look better, but be more comfortable.
The Town of Iron� River relief roll for September is $244.75.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd� Ellis of Tripp, at St. Francis hospital, a son,
Sept. 14th.
J.L. MacRae of this city, who was appointed colonel by Governor Heil,
received an invitation last week to sit with the Board of Personnel at
Madison� in conducting hearings respecting qualifications for the position
of conservation warden. He is now in
Madison.
Mrs. Ralph Mellon had the misfortune to step on a nail last Monday, with
the result that she is nursing a sore foot this week.
Mrs. George W. Smith left recently for Mansfield, Ohio, where she will
remain for the winter with her daughter, Miss Elsie, who is teaching� in
that city.
The work of paving on U.S. Highway No. 2 is being pushed as rapidly as
possible in a race against cold weather, and with practically no rain for
the past week to interfere, the progress made has been very satisfactory.
September 24, 1959
Mrs. Edna Ann Rocheleau, 72, died� unexpectedly in her home in Iron River
Sunday morning. She was born Sept. 4, 1887, in Iowa, and came to the Tripp
area in 1919. She was a member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church. Mrs.
Rocheleau was preceded in death by her husbands, Frederick Armagost and a
son, Kendall Armagost. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence (Irma)
Berube, Brule; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a stepson,
Verne Rocheleau, Marquette, Mich., and a stepdaughter, Arlene Powers of
Milwaukee. Services were held Tuesday with Rev. Herman Kossack officiating.
Interment was in the Iron River Cemetery.
A joint birthday party for John �Jack� P. Hicks, 80, Iron River, and Marvin
Fields, 53, Superior was held at the Clarence Shulstad� home Sunday
afternoon. Guests were Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Martin, Mrs. Frank Martin, Francis Hicks and Wendy of
Ashland; Mr. and Mrs. Norman� Fields, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Fields, Diane and
Dick of Superior; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond �Bush� Follis and Gene of Brule; Mr.
and Mrs. Eustace Clark; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Flick; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Johnson
and family; Mr. and Mrs. John P. Hicks, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Shulstad, all
of Iron River; and Merwin Shulstad who left for Virginia by plane on Sunday.
For a small town, Iron River may well boast of its number of young people
attending college. Among the number are Joanne Willoughby, Judy Vacha,
Joanne Dippel, Kathy and Judy Moran, Karen Peterson, Bill Thompson at
Superior State; Helen Rice and Betty Vacha at LaCrosse; Darlene Anderson and
Ron Johnson at Stout; Jim
Darwin, Butch Thompson, John Josephs and Leroy Hanson at the U at Madison;
Laureen Pomish at Minneapolis and Herbert Pomish at Fargo, North Dakota.
Blessed Events: Mr. and Mrs. Isadore Sznaider announce the birth of a son
at St. Joseph�s hospital Sept. 20th. They have three other children, Thomas,
10; Sally, 8; and Loretta, 4.
Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Maki are the proud parents of Paul Maynard, born Sept.
20th. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Uno Maki and Mr. and Mrs. Art Peterson.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Heino are the parents of a boy born Sept. 15th; Mr. and
Mrs. Richard Rantala are the parents of a boy born Sept. 15th; Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Karna are the parents of a boy born Sept. 14th; Mr. and Mrs. Eugene
Willoughby of Ashland announce the arrival of a daughter, Carla Marie, on
Sept. 12th. They have two other
children, Sandra and Wendy.
