Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Iron River Memories

December 25, 1941
Martin Maki of Oulu, a graduate of the Iron River High School,
has been employed by the First State Bank of Port Wing to take the
local management of the Iron River branch to fill the vacancy caused by the
resignation of Leonard Blomgren, who has taken employment in
California. Miss Norma Helsing, who has been employed for several
years in the parent bank in Port Wing, will be here to help Mr. Maki get
acquainted with his new duties. Mr. Maki's friends feel that he will more
than make good in his new position, and they certainly wish him every
success.
Tom Armbruster, son of George R. Armbruster of this city, has
joined Uncle Sam's Navy. He passed the first mental and physical
examination, and on Monday received his father's formal consent and
will leave for Minneapolis this week.
Warren Bailey, son o f Mr. and Mrs. Arby Bailey of Tripp, was in Ashland a
few days ago and signed up to join the Merchant Marine.
Phillip Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nels C. Nelson of the Town of
Tripp and a graduate of the Iron River High School, has volunteered in
the service of Uncle Sam, and has chosen the Air Force and hopes to
become a flyer. He was sent to Kelly Field, Tex., and as soon as he
arrived there he notified his folks that everything was "jake." It is said
that Phillip passed a perfect physical and mental test. (Note -- sadly, in
1942, Phillip lost his life as a flyer over the Ploesti Oil Fields in
Rumania.)
Ellen Savage, who teaches at Wheaton, Ill., is home for the
holidays as is Coreda Fuhrmann, who teaches at Mellen.
Miss Melda Herman, who is teaching in North Dakota, is home for the
holidays. Miss Phyllis Claus, director of music in the Iron River schools,
left this weekend to visit her mother, who is now employed in Washington,
D.C.
Mr. and Mrs. Myron Harbour and daughter were in town Monday
en route to Superior to visit relatives. Mr. Harbour taught in the Iron
River schools for several years and is now located at Campbellsport,
Wis., near Fond du Lac, where he is teaching science and coaching
athletics.
Lowell Mitchell, who is teaching this year at Aneta, North Dakota, is here
for a few days visit.
Dec. 24, 1959
Home on furlough from Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., are Don Johnson
and Alfred Crase. The Townsend brothers, Ray and Bob, are home on
leave for the holidays. Ray will leave the 14th for a base in Canada. Bob is
at Great Lakes and will return there Jan. 2. Ray brought his
grandmother, Mrs. Rose Mears, from Elmhurst to spend the holidays
here.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Johnson are the parents of a son born Dec. 18, and named
Craig Edward. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Arne Johnson
of Brule and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Wilcox of Iron River.
A group of out-of-town judges toured Iron River this week,
judging home Christmas decorations at the request of the Chamber of
Commerce. First prize was won for the Pat Callahan home, second prize
for the Wally Simpson home and third prize for the Maynard "Slim"
Clark home. Eighteen Iron River homes were given honorable mention.
Donald Shulstad is home on leave from the Army until after the
first of the year. He will be transferred to Fort Lewis, Wash., upon his
return. Brother Merwin is still here, making the holiday complete for the
Clarence Shulstad family.
Home from their jobs on the boats are Marcus Crase, Lloyd Little, Leslie
Julien, Dick Johnson and perhaps we missed a few?
The college crowd is home for Christmas vacation. To call the
roll: Jim Darwin, LeRoy Hanson, Lloyd Makela, John Joseph, Jim
Teppo, Bob Thompson, Judy and Kathy Moran, JoAnne Dippel, Punch
and Judy Vacha, Pat Savage, Joanne Willoughby, Bill Raivala, Helen
Rice, Darlene Anderson, Joan Morey, Laureen and Herbert Pomish.
Ray Briggs left last Thursday on the first leg of his journey to Liberia,
where he has signed a two-year contract to work in an ore mine project.
(Note --Mr. Briggs lost his life on the job there.)
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Fuhrmann announce the engagement of their
daughter, Judith Fern, to Jerold Lee Darwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay
Darwin. Miss Fuhrmann is a graduate of Iron River High School and
attended Superior State College. She is now employed at Bayfield
Electric Co-op in Iron River. Mr. Darwin is also a graduate of Iron River
High School and is employed at the Iron River Motor and Implement Co. A June
wedding is being planned.
Mrs. P.J. Savage left Tuesday for the west to spend the winter with her
daughters in Washington and Oregon.
