Savage, editor of the Iron River PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec. 3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the web".

Iron River Memories

Christ A. Field, age 73 years and one of Iron River�s oldest residents, died May 8 at the Ashland General Hospital, shortly after being brought there from his home in this city. Mr. Field had been ill for a week and was greatly weakened when hiccups set in, and that was ascribed as the immediate cause of his death. Christ Field was born in Oslo, Norway, Sept. 5, 1868. When 18 years of age, he immigrated to the States and had lived in Minnesota and Woodville, Wis., before coming to reside in Iron River in 1892. He and Mrs. Field raised a large family and Christ is survived by two sons and eight daughters, namely Gust and Marvin, Iron River; Mrs. Maude Engel, Sunbury, Pa.; Mrs. Henry Martin and Mrs. Frank Martin of Ashland; Mrs. Arthur Love, Washburn; Mrs. Myrtle Pierce, Milwaukee; Mrs. J.P. (Olga) Hicks, Mrs. Ida Clark and Mrs. Clarence (Zona) Shulstad of Iron River. He is also survived by several grandchildren. His wife preceded (him) to the life beyond the grave several years ago.. The funeral was held at the Congregational Church with Rev. Robert F. Black officiating. Mr. Field was a stone mason by trade and followed that work the years he resided in Iron River until advanced age and ill health compelled him to retire. All of the children of the deceased were present at the funeral.

The heavy frosts of last Thursday and Friday nights ruined the prospects of a blueberry crop in the region. The blueberries were in full bloom in the area and far enough along to suffer from the freeze. The loss of the blueberry crop is considered a severe blow to upper Wisconsin, for as a money crop, it is one of considerable importance.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Moran, a son, May 15, at St. Francis Hospital, Superior.

Keith Roe, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Roe of this city, who had remarkably high standings during his four years as a student in the Iron River High School, has received word that he has been selected to take an examination in Madison in the near future with a view of entering West Point, should he meet the physical and scholarship requirements. He was recommended by Senator LaFollette for the appointment. Keith was a member of the graduating class of 1942 from the Iron River High School.

Gladys Hanson and Leone Herman left Tuesday for Los Angeles, where they expect to spend a few weeks and remain there permanently if they find suitable employment.

William Kivisto, who is with the troops in Iceland, wrote that Iceland should be called Snowland as it has plenty of the white stuff. The absence of trees has attracted the attention of several local boys who are there. Ted Mellon remarked that in scouting around he found just one tree.

May 19, 1960

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wiinamaki of Maple are the parents of a daughter born May 13. Mr. Wiinamaki is coach at the Iron River High School. Mrs. Wiinamaki is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Berube of Brule.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rantala, a daughter, Julie Lynn, on May 9.

Phillip Beeksma has been selected as a delegate from the Clover Valley 4-H Club, Herbster, to attend State 4-H Club Week at the University of Wisconsin June 13-30. This is his sixth year in 4-H work.

Norman Shulstad of Milwaukee has just received a promotion. He will be vice principal of Longfellow Junior High School in Wauwatosa, effective Aug. 24. Norman has previously taught at Highland Park, Ill., Oconomowoc, Janesville, Drummond and Iron River. He is an Iron River High School graduate. He received his B.S. degree from Wisconsin State College at Superior, studied aerological (sic) engineering at the University of California at Los Angeles, and received his masters degree in administration at Marquette University.

The graduating class of South Shore High School announces that baccalaureate services will be held at the Herbster gym May 22 at 8 p.m. Commencement exercises will be held Thursday, May 26, also at the Herbster gym. Honor students in the senior class include Karen Clauson, Nancy Krozier, Glenn Isaksson, William Kalin, Nadine Klecha, Shirley Landon, Delores Lindelof, Ted Phillips and Edward Teppo. Karen June Larvick and Karen Lee Nelson have been named co-valedictorians of the class.

Darlene Anderson was recently elected president of the YWCA at Stout State College at Menonomie. Darlene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Anderson, is a sophomore this year.

Frank Flick, 70, Iron River, died Friday in an Ashland hospital. Born Oct. 9, 1889, in Milwaukee, he had been a maintenance man in the shops of the Milwaukee Railway Company for 33 years. He retired in 1953 and moved to Iron River. He was married to Maude Fields Engel in April 1953. He was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Maude; a son, LeRoy of West Allis; a sister, Lena Heyel, Mellen; and two grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday at Calvary Presbyterian Church with Rev. Herman Kossack officiating. Burial was in Iron River City Cemetery.
