I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Headlines in the Pioneer -- Mrs. Okerstrom Dead. Six Injured in Auto Crash
on Highway 13.
Last Saturday night at about 10 o'clock, two sedan cars, one
driven by Roy Okerstrom of Bayfield, and the other by Eldy Van Art of
Highbridge in Ashland County, met head on in the center of the broad
highway. Mrs. Okerstrom was killed instantly while all the others
received serious injuries, and were all or nearly all unconscious when
picked up and taken to the Ashland hospital. The Okerstroms and the
Holms (sic) were down to Rice Lake and were heading for their home in
Bayfield. The Van Art car, in which Matt Starry and Charles Jack of
Highbridge were riding, was headed south. This accident, which
involved so many people known in this area, has been the topic of
conversation everywhere in these parts, and cast a spell of gloom among all
their friends.
The County Marble Tournament was held in Washburn, on the
Lincoln School grounds on May 14th. Donald Thoreson of Washburn
won 1st place and Jack Wilske of Iron River 2nd place. The match was
very close. Wesley Willoughby of Iron River won third. Donald
Thoreson and Jack Wilske are to go to Superior May 21st to take part in the
District Tournament.
On Saturday night last, at about 9 o'clock, the barn on the farm of
Garnet Hooper, well known resident and former chairman of the town of
Tripp, was discovered on fire by some of the neighbors. The Hooper
family was away at the time and they are utterly at a loss to know how
the fire started.
While most of the farm animals were out to pasture, among those still in
the barn was a blind horse, a pet of the family, a bull and three calves.
Hoy Campbell, traveling along County Trunk A, rushed over there and
succeeded in saving one calf, but the flames had made such headway he could
not reach the other animals. The loss will run considerably, and Mr. Hooper
was unfortunate enough to have only $100 insurance on the property.
The Old Timers, the 1919 baseball for the town of Oulu, has come
back to life and intends to show some of those youngsters of 1938 how
the good old American game should be played. Ike Wilkins, with his
smoke ball, will be on the mound for the Old Times, and Charley Hissa
will do the receiving. The Old Timers lineup is as follows: Charley
Hissa, catcher; Isaac Wilkins, pitcher; Eino Hissa, first base; Bill Hissa,
second base; John Pyykola, third base; shortstop is open with several rival
candidates; Frank Lehto, right field, Leonard Lehto, center field; and Oscar
Lehto, left field.

their daughter, Ellen, to Dr. J.E. Campbell of Roseburg, Ore. The

medicine since returning from service in the late World War.
