Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.
Iron River Memories

February 19, 1942
A card has been received by this paper from Melvin Knapp, who is taking
treatment for a rare blood disease at the University of California, and he
desires to have us state in this paper that he is very grateful to the
friends here who helped make possible his going to California and receive
treatment there. He further states that the doctor attending him says that
he is improving very satisfactorily.
J.R. Desparois, chairman of the Town of Hughes, and William Meyer of the
Town of Delta left yesterday to attend the Outdoor Show in Chicago, and they
expect to be away for several days.
Angus Ojala of Oulu was in town and registered for the draft. Mr. Ojala
says that he is one of the few that has been obliged to register in both
this and the first World War. In the first one, he was just old enough to
register and in this one he was just young enough to do so.
Gust Kivisto, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Kivisto, went down to
Detroit last year to work for a firm in the air conditioning business. He
had been rejected for military service on account of his physical condition
a few months ago, but Gust wanted to join the Navy and recently took another
physical, and this time he passed and is in the Navy now, and soon expects
to complete his shore training preliminary to going on to the briny deep.
Charles Vojacek, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Vojacek, is home from St.
Mary's Hospital in Superior again, where he returned a couple of weeks ago
to have a rifle bullet removed from his body. Shot by a careless deer hunter
last fall, the bullet lodged between two ribs near his backbone, so since
the presence of the bullet bothered and retarded his complete recovery, the
surgeon decided it was now best to remove it at this time.
The unhappy Germans lack skis in Russia -- but the Russians not only have
skis on their feet but on the ends of their names! Himmel! --Portland

Chairman J.L. MacRae, who has been ill for the last few weeks, was able to
get down to his store for a few hours Monday, and from now on hopes to
increase his hours there daily until he gets back to his old schedule. He
has been obliged under doctor's orders to remain pretty close to home for
two weeks after returning from the hospital.
Now playing at the Rex Theater -- Will Rogers in "Old Kentucky" and
coming, Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor in "The Maltese Falcon."
February 18, 1960
Connie Leafblad, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Leafblad, has been
selected by the senior class and faculty of the Iron River High School as a
candidate for the DAR Good Citizenship award. She was selected on the basis
of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
Dale Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Anderson, caught a
beautiful, big northern (pike) Sunday at the river. It weighed 18� pounds
and was 39 inches long. Quite an accomplishment for an 11-year-old boy.
Commencing Feb. 15th, the Buckhorn Tavern is under new
management. The new operators and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sveda.
Mrs. Clarence Sauve celebrated her birthday Valentine's Day with a party.
Her guests were Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Sauve and family of Superior;
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Szczgiel of Ashland; Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Sauve;
and Mrs. Harold Evenstad and Clintie of Milwaukee.
Mrs. Louis Pomish is a patient at St. Mary's Hospital, Duluth.
Lt. Emil "Buzz" Buran of George AFB, Calif., was visiting his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Buran, the past weekend. Buzz is due to leave
for the Philippines the end of the month. Herbert Buran and Miss Madeline
Drinkwine of Superior, and John Buran, were also there for the weekend.
Miss Karen Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Peterson of Superior,
former owners of Log Cabin Lodge, is now employed as a private secretary at
Minnesota Mining Company of St. Paul. Karen is a 1959 graduate of Iron River
High School.
Perk's Women' s Team lost two games to College Inn (bowling).
Scores: Ann Brozovich 376; Mille Darwin 354; Rose Peterson 332; Marge
Mataya 429; Ethel Leifeste, high single game with high 3 game total 452.

The Maynard Clark family was in Minneapolis a few days last
week. "Slim" attended the Pryrofax gas convention and also visited the
Hugh Henkel family.
