Bayfield County Journal Memories Column

Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield COUNTY JOURNAL, successor to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec. 3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the web".

I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

There will be German Lutheran services at the Gus Herman residence on Friday evening at 8 p.m. Rev. P. Schedler of Ashland will conduct the services. He has taken over the pastorate of Rev. Hattstaedt, who went to another field.

Rev. and Mrs. Talmadge Hartman arrived here last Thursday from Tennessee, and Rev. Hartman will assume the pastorate of First Congregational Church in Iron River. He drove up with a truck, taking his furniture and household effects with him, and the family is occupying the parsonage. Rev. Hartman said the peach trees were in bloom in his old home in Tennessee and stepping into a Northern Wisconsin winter is quite a radical change.

Arnold C. Fuhrmann of Kerrick, Minn., spent Tuesday in town calling on old friends and visiting with his brother, John, and family. Mr. Fuhrmann reports that he is doing a nice business with his cheese factory at Kerrick and is well satisfied with the location.

Clifford Ripley, born and raised here, figured in an accident in Superior one day last week. He is now a traffic cop on the Superior force. He undertook to catch a speeder and ran into a car that came off a side street. His car rolled over five times before finally stopping. Mr. Flagstad, a veteran on the Superior police force, was riding with him and the elderly man was badly injured, but Clifford luckily escaped with but slight injuries.

A recruiting drive is now on to obtain 100 young men for enlistment in the U.S. Army. This is an inducement for young men between the ages of 18 and 32, single, no criminal record and physically qualified, to improve themselves financially and physically. Pay starts at $21 per month, including meals, lodging, clothing, medical and dental care. Thirty days per year leave with full pay. Enlistments open for Fort Lincoln, N.D., and Fort Snelling, Minn.

Expert accountants have finally completed months of labor and arrived with the answer that the total cost of the Depression was $149,000,000. All we can say is that it wasn't worth it.

P.J. Savage in Hospital.

Judge P.J. Savage evidently got lonesome when he heard about Judges Hart and Risjord having operations over at the Ashland hospital, for on Sunday evening he was taken to the Ashland General Hospital. It was upon returning from his sister-in-law's funeral (Emma Astlund Savage, wife of Joseph) last Sunday that he was seized with pains in his abdomen that seemed to grow worse. Nurse Agnes Isaacson was called and when she saw she could not relieve the pain, called Dr. Smiles and he informed her to bring Mr. Savage to the hospital. He was operated on this morning and is reported to be in good condition and is expected to be home in a week or so. We hope he improves quickly and will be as good as new. So -- the editor has left town and we hope that this week's edition of the Pioneer will not suffer too greatly.
