Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec. 3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the web".

I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Iron River Memories

William H. HOOD of Chicago, staying at one of Ben BRIEDENBACH�s cabins at Pike Lake Park, hooked and landed a musky in Busky Bay, which measured 46 inches in length and weighed 28 pounds.

Mr. and Mrs. Leland SAVAGE, accompanied by their daughters, Evelyn and Helen, arrived from New Haven, Conn., to visit at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.J. SAVAGE.

Theodore N. HOGFELDT, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl HOGFELDT, and Miss LaVerne PETERSON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest PETERSON, both of Port Wing, were united in marriage July 11 by Rev. C.A. AHRENS, pastor of the Calvary Presbyterian Church. Mr. HOGFELDT is a lineman in the employ of the Port Wing Telephone Co. His age was given as 23, and his bride, 19.

At the reception for Rev. and Mrs. C.A. AHRENS given by the Presbyterian churches of Port Wing, Brule and Iron River, there will be vocal selections by Jean YEAKEY, Phyllis CLAUS and Leslie BUNDGAARD. Dr. KELLY of Chicago, who is spending a month at his summer home on the Pike Lakes, will give a short address. Everyone is welcome and bring your friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas FARLEY and children, Tom and Jane Mary, have been visiting at the home of Mrs. FARLEY�s parents, the Emil BERNARDs.

Charles CHRAMOSTA reports that his grandson, Emmett BRABANT, is now in Australia, and of course is wearing one of Uncle Sam�s uniforms. His letter indicated he was OK in every way.

Two more Iron River boys have enlisted in the armed forces of the United States, Charles DODGE and Walter MILLER, and will soon leave for duty.

Several of our citizens were in Superior last Sunday to witness the launching of the first boat turned out by the BUTLER Ship Yards. Governor HEIL of Wisconsin, Senator HERRING of Iowa, Mr. BUTLER, a member of the Maritime Commission and some high labor officials were there and helped make the occasion memorable to the 10,000 people who attended.

July 14, 1960

Mr. and Mrs. John TUURA will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary July 17 at their cabin on Lake Superior. Open house will be from 1 to 4 p.m. The TUURAs have six children and 21 grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Norman TUURA are the parents of another daughter, born July 12 at St. Joseph�s Hospital in Superior. Grandparents are the Charles KIGGINs and the John TUURAs.

Two babies were baptized at the Calvary Presbyterian Church last 8unday: Gail Marie VOJACEK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. VOJACEK. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Emery MOREY. (Also baptized,) Timothy Allan LAVIN, son of the Larry LAVINs.

Miss Arvilla WEYANDT, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max WEYANDT of Brule, was crowned trout queen at Brule�s homecoming festivities last Saturday. Her attendants were Cathy BERUBE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence BERUBE, and Doreen SINSE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Art LAURI of Brule. In the baseball game, Brule defeated Iron River 14-10.

Marine PFC Daniel KNAPP, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vern KNAPP of Iron River, participated in Operation Sea Hawk near Pohang, Korea, June 14,-21, with the 3rd Marine Division.

Theodore (Ted) CALLAHAN and Joey HARRISON leave next Sunday to attend the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Colorado Springs, Colo. Ted is an Eagle Scout and Joey is a Star Scout.
