Bayfield County Journal Memories Column

Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield COUNTY JOURNAL, successor to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec. 3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the web".

I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Next week has been designated as annual cleanup week, and it is the request of the town board that all property owners and citizens make a special effort to cooperate with us in this campaign to make our town presentable. Please do not dispose of your rubbish by dumping in alleys or other vacant lots. Haul it to the dump. Due to lack of funds we will be unable to do your cleaning or haul your rubbish as was done in the past. Your Town Board.

Dust from the Dust Bowl of the Midwest central states swept over upper Wisconsin Tuesday and Wednesday, and the sky was overcast with a yellowish cloud of dust that produced a weird effect when the sun shone through it. Yesterday a brief rain storm tended to clear the air somewhat.

A fire which originated on the roof or around the chimney destroyed the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Victor POHJONEN May 5th. When the fire was discovered it ws too late to check it, and the entire house ws a mass of flames. The greater part of the household goods and personal effects of the family were destroyed. The POHJONEN family have the sympathy of all their neighbors in their serious loss.

William URPILA of Oulu had the misfortune of injuring one of his eyes last Sunday. A hot rivet he was driving flew back and struck him. There is danger of losing his sight in that eye.

The Christian Endeavor of Calvary Presbyterian Church and the Brule Society united Tuesday evening at the annual banquet for the Christian Endeavor Societies of the northern district. One hundred-twenty young people partook of a splendid meal prepared by the Brule Ladies Aid. The new Brule Town Hall was prettily decorated for the occasion and is a most valuable asset to the community life of a next-door community.

Mrs. Julia BLAIR of LAnse, Mich., spent the weekend visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. Michael COSTELLO.

Wardens WASKOW of Bayfield and MINOR of Iron River made a trip up the Cranberry River and there found a party of men from the neighborhood fishing with a hoop net, apparently after suckers. Two men were arrested and on Tuesday, they pled guilty before Judge SAVAGE in local Municipal Court and were given the alternative of a fine of $550 and costs each or serving 30 days in jail. (By the writer -- The Pioneer gave the names of the two men, but as one is still alive, you will have to find out the names some other way. Sorry.)

Willard MITCHELL of this city was the low bidder for carrying the mail on the route between Ashland and the Head of the Lakes, and will take over the job June 1st. He has rented a home in Ashland and expects to get settled there with his family before his term commences. Willard is the son of George MITCHELL, veteran mail carrier on the Route 1 out of this city and a veteran of World War II.

A grass fire at the James C. MORAN residence ignited a cedar hedge and before the fire was checked, it killed a section of the hedge some 15 feet in length. Mr. MORAN had given a good deal of time and energy in developing as fine a hedge as there was to be found in this area and naturally hated very much to see it damaged. The fire department was called out but the fire ws practically out before they landed on the scene.

Mr. and Mrs. Hugh HENKEL are the parents of a daughter born May 13th.

Ride with Greyhound to Chicago -- $7.10 one way, $12.80 round trip.

Dewey ARMBRUSTER Jr. on Saturday found a number of dynamite caps while looking through a shed on the George MITCHELL farm property a mile north of this city, and did the usual boyish trick by exploding a cap between two stones, and with the usual result of injuring the boy quite badly. He was taken to an Ashland hospital for treatment. Mr. MITCHELL had been doing some land clearing and had a few dynamite caps left over, and thought he hid them where they would not be found, but it seems that a boy can smell dynamite caps farther away than a bear can smell honey.

Al SHOLZEN returned the first of the week from Racine, where he spent the winter at his old home. He announces that while he was away, he took unto himself a wife. Congratulations for a long and happy wedded life, Al.

Gary RIEMAN , aged 8 years, from Madison, caught a rainbow trout which measured 22 inches in length and weighed 5 pounds, 4 ounces when weighed in at the M.C. PLATT Sporting Goods Store. The boy came up with his father and went out fishing with Bob HOUGAS. Gary, who is a student the in the second grade at Nicoma School in Madison, will have something to tell his classmates when he gets back.

Racing News by Jerry TABELLE: On the local scene, Luke McLEAN and his crew are still in a state of semi-retirement. At the end of last years season, Luke was in 2nd position in total points and decided to cal it quits. In talking with Luke, LeRoy HANSON and Allan TABELLE, this early retirement is hard to contend with. After some 12 odd years on the tracks, it is hard to stop dead in your tracks. Strangely enough, rumors have been overheard in far corners that Luke McLEAN will once again pilot a chariot around the ovals. Also it is rumored that this writer may once again have a chance to ride one of the junk-buckets again. Good pit men are at a premium -- any takers? C.A. PETERSON, Iron Rivers official racing advisor, had no comment at press time.

The Iron River Homemakers Club received notice from KDAL Radio and TV that they may tour the station on Monday, May 20th. Members who plan to go, please meet at the Post Office promptly at 9:30 a.m.
