Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".

We will begin harvesting ice on Monday, Feb. 16th. Any person desiring to put up ice can get it at our ice platform near the power house at Iron River on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 16th and 17th. Iron River Water, Light and Telephone Company. Leander Jacobson and his sister, Mrs. Ernest Chantelois, were recent Ashland visitors. Well, neighbors, it wasn't so hard to get used to the new War time, was it? Attend the dance at the gym this evening, given for the benefit of the Red Cross Drive; and sponsored by the Educational Committee of the Co-operative Store. Lunch will be served. Admission 25 cents -- children 15 cents. Tax collection notices were published in the Pioneer by the following town treasurers: Barnes, Clinton Davis; Tripp, Mae Benz; Orienta, Iris Kalin; Hughes, Raymond Lindgren; Iron River, Mabel Vacha; Oulu, Fred A. Carter. President Jack Leifeste of the Iron River High School Alumni Association has announced the following committee appointments for the annual banquet to take place at the Iron River gym, Saturday night, April 4th: Invitations: Dorothy Pudas, Doris Moran; Decorations: Myrtle Frasa, Aleta Fuhrmann, Jane Larkin; Dance: William Vacha, Roland Kennedy, James Moran Jr., Richard Ingle; Entertainment: Alice Johnson, Virginia Tarter, Norman Shulstad; Place Cards: Gladys Hanson and Leone Herman. Iron River now has its share of service men and women serving their country in military camps, etc., and they, like others in the camps, find that it would be helpful in making military life pleasanter to have more reading matter. If you people have good books which you desire to donate, please turn them over the Mrs. Frank Hoefling and she will see that they are forwarded to our service people. H.O. Lund reports that his son, King, who was accidentally shot during hunting season near Iron River last November, is getting better rapidly now after experiencing several serious setbacks. He is about to resume his duties as Superintendent of Schools at Bayport, Minn. February 9, 1950 Two Iron River boys will receive the)Boy Scouts' highest rank, the Eagle award, on Feb. 13. They are Frank Mehtala Jr., and David Goldberg. Henry Jurvelin of the Town of Oulu was the victim of a hit and run driver. His body was found on the bridge over the Iron River west of town last Sunday morning. [Unclear whether Jurvelin item belongs in 1950 or 1960 section.] February 11, 1960 Mr. and Mrs. Dave Leslie of Iron River, operators of the A&W Root Beer stand, are the parents of a baby boy born Jan. 1, at Orlando, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Sauve announce the recent marriage of their son, Gordon, to Miss Signa Norman of Maple. The ceremony was performed Jan. 30 at the home of the bride's father in Chicago. The young couple will make their home in Milwaukee. Extensive remodeling operations are complete at Vacha's Restaurant. Both the upstairs and basement kitchens have been thoroughly modernized and new equipment of stainless steel and white enamel has been installed. In the basement are two new commercial grills and ranges and huge new sinks. An amazing potato peeler capable of peeling a bushel of spuds in five minutes is a great labor saver. Fluorescent lighting has been installed throughout. The upstairs kitchen has been rearranged and new equipment, freezer, refrigerator, double oven, stainless steel sinks and formica countertops have been added. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Vacha can be very proud of their beautiful and modern restaurant. Fred Hoefling, 65, died Saturday, Feb. 6, at Compton, Calif., of a lingering illness. Born in Beatrice, Neb., Mr. Hoefling lived on a farm north of Brule and also at Washburn before going west. He is survived by his wife; one daughter and one son; two sisters; three brothers, Jack, Orienta; Louis, Brule; and Frank, Iron River. The census taker is getting more personal all the time. They are poking their noses into such matters as occupation, income, education, marital status and the fertility of women. In 1950, they wanted to know about your plumbing. This year they're going to find out whether you are really keeping up with the Joneses. A sample of the population will be asked whether they have a washing machine, clothes dryer, freezer, air conditioner and the number of cars in the family garage A pink and blue shower was held in honor of Mrs. Jim Vojacek at the Adolph Aho home. Hostesses were Mrs. Adolph Aho, Mrs. Einer Hoffren and Mrs. Walter Simpson. Mrs. Vojacek received many lovely gifts for her baby-to-be.
