Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec. 3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the web".

June 11, 1942

The funeral of Mrs. James H. TOMLINSON , whose death was announced last week in the Pioneer, took place last Friday at the Congregational Church , where she was an active and working member for the 50 years of her life in Iron River. The deceased is survived by her husband, James H.; two daughters, Miss Vesta TOMLINSON, teaching at Racine, and Mrs. Merna (Ward) PERRY of Grand Blanc, Mich.; and a son, James A. of Ishpeming, Mich.; and also by two grandchildren James and Peter TOMLINSON. Rev. Robert F. BLACK conducted the service in Iron River. Mrs. John JOHNSON sang two of Mrs. TOMLINSON�s favorite hymns and the pall bearers were L.H. MERRIHEW, A.G. JOHNSON, Ole OLSON, Henry KAMRATH, James C. MORAN and John JOHNSON.

Robert W. LEA, a former Iron River boy, is in a list of 1941 salaries listed by the SEC; Mr. LEA is vice president of the Johns-Manville Corp. and his salary for 1941 is listed as $76,359. He ought to be able to struggle along on that!

James Wylie TUTOR of Iron River has been honored by the Military Department of the United States for bravery in the days of the First World War and last week received the Purple Heart. Mr. TUTOR has been notified that still other awards are coming to him, one the Silver Star, and the other, the Croix De Guerre, the latter the highest award of France for bravery. (Mr. TUTOR was badly injured by gas in the First World War -- with his large family he enlisted in the Second World War -- in the Navy, no less.)

Felix SZNAIDER, son of Albert SZNAIDER, well known resident of the town of Hughes, is here from Detroit , visiting his dad and his brother, Isadore, and sister. Felix is another resident of this vicinity who works for Packard Motor (the other being Emil MAKI), and he says you can believe all you hear about Detroit getting into war production business 100 percent, and he also speaks with pride about the quality as well as quantity of products coming off the Detroit assembly lines.

Five hundred Boy Scouts attended the Camporee at Lake Ruth last weekend and you can leave it to the youngsters to have a good time even if the weather is not so great. Since this is the third year in a row that the weather during Camporee Days was not nearly as fine as it normally is, maybe the committee on weather ought to get fired!

Isaac WILKINS in Iron River and L.D. PEASE is Barnes have been appointed voluntary farm representatives of the U.S. Employment Service in their respective towns and will assist the service in recruiting and placing farm workers. They will serve without pay.

June 9, 1960

Benjamin Ralph UPSON, 78, longtime resident of Iron River, died early Monday morning at Trinity Hospital in Ashland, where he had been a patient for the last four weeks. Mr. Upson operated the Upson Saw Mill on the Iron River for many years. He was born April 5, 1882, at McDill, Wis., and as a child lived in Park Falls and Butternut before moving to Iron River with his parents in 1892, where he has resided since. He was married Nov. 26, 1907, in Duluth to Kathryn Grace McCANN of Lake Nebagamon. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Ethel (George) BROWN of Superior; a sister, Mrs. Maybelle CHANTELOIS of Iron River; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Congregational Church with Rev. Herman KOSSACK officiating. burial was in the Iron River City Cemetery.
