Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Iron River Memories

In Memoriam -- Mrs. Sarah Riley passed from this earth Dec. 10,
1937. She has no living relatives here to mark the anniversary of her
death, but has has many friends to whom her memory will ever linger,
for she was indeed a true friend. Mrs. Mary Rogers and Miss Helen
Taylor.
Clifford Elliott of this city struck and killed a fawn buck deer on
Highway 2 at a point two miles west of this city last Saturday evening. The
car was badly damaged, but Mr. Elliott escaped injury. Warden Fred Minor was
notified of the accident and took possession of the deer.
Mrs. Catherine Beaudry, age 39 years, a resident of the town of
Brule for 15 years, passed away at her home last Sunday night. her
death was entirely unexpected, for she was up and about as usual and
retired at her usual hour with no complaints. A half-hour later, she
became suddenly and violently ill and passed away before medical aid
could reach her. She is survived by her husband, Edward, two sons,
Leroy and Ronald; six daughters, Caroline, Dorothy, Betty, Jean, Ellen and
Marion; her father, Ben Baumgartner; two brothers, Frank and
Edward. Funeral services will be held Friday from the Lenroot Funeral
Home at 9:30 a.m. and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Iron River,
with Rev. JohnDzurko officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael
Cemetery.
Card of thanks --We wish to thank all the neighbors and friends
who attended the recent housewarming given in our honor in the town of
Tripp, and for the many gifts, including a purse, which was presented
to us. Mr. and Mrs. Arvo Lahti.

Fred Lange, age 75 years, father of Mrs. William Meyer of Delta,
died at an Ashland hospital last Sunday night. Born June 1, 1873, at
Baden, Germany, he came to this country with his parents when but one
year old. The family settled at Reedsburg, where he spent most of his
life and worked as a mason and carpenter. For the past six years, he has
made his home with his duaghter, Olga Meyer, at her home. Mr. Lange
is survived by three sons, Fred and Marcus of Plymouth, Wis., and
Oscar of Reedsburg; four daughters, Edna of Baraboo, Constance of
Madison, Florence of Rock Springs, and Olga of Delta. Interment took
place at Reedsburg.
Mr. and Mrs. P.S. Savage announce the approaching marriage of
their daughter, Myrta Elizabeth, now residing in Duluth, to Charles L.
Church, also a resident of that city. The marriage will take place in
Duluth Dec. 11th.
Lloyd Little, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Little of this city, who has been a
member of the U.S. Air Force for nearly four years, is home on a furlough
and seems mighty happy to see his folks and old friends. He is stationed on
the island of Trinidad, which was leased to the United States.
