Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Iron River Memories

May 7, 1942
Iron River Rebekah Lodge members will hold meetings on the first
and third Thursdays at 2 p.m. for the purpose of making bandages for
home defense. Anyone having large or small sugar or flour sacks, sheets or
pillow cases may contribute them to the lodge. Mrs. T.F. Callahan is
chairman of the committee, assisted by Mrs. Emil Hanson, Mrs. Isaac Wilkins,
Mrs. Willis Ingle and Mrs. Charles Diamon.
Berkeley Wells, who left Bayfield County a few weeks ago as
leader of a contingent of some 40 men going into military service, wrote
to Charles Willoughby of this city that he has now completed basic
training at Camp Crowder, Mo., and is being sent to another post, where he
will take a five-month course in radio, for which he is well qualified.
On May 1, Mr. and Mrs. George Grown, who have operated a
restaurant in the Jardine Block, turned over their business to Lillian
Sauve. Mrs. Sauve is experienced in the restaurant business and intends to
give the public the high standard of service they have enjoyed at this
restaurant in the past.
Carroll Hobbs, Adolph Dahl and Robert Willoughby leave the
county today to enlist in military service. There are now over 50 young men
from Iron River in the service to date.
Miss Naomi Lavin, who taught school at Durand during the past
school year up to six weeks ago, when she came home ill (with scarlet
fever, has recovered) without having permanent side effects. She went
back to Durand last week to finish her term.
The 1942 budget of the town of Iron River is as follows: Highway fund,
$800; poor fund, $900; hydrant rental, $2,000; street lights, $900; siren,
$18; school levy, $2,250; children's band, $200; civil defense, $100;
information bureau, $100.

Waiter: We serve anyone; sit down.
Bert Bousley is erecting an addition to his building on Mill Street to make
room for the installation of a dining room for the restaurant now being
operated by Mrs. Ella Grecol.
April 21, 1960
Two-hundred alumni were in attendance at the annual banquet of
the Iron River High School Alumni Association. Roy Lyons, Class of
1940, was the toastmaster. Miss Emy Mollenhoff, Class of 1900,
represented the oldest class present. The new officers are William Wick,
president; Elmira Knapp, vice president; secretary, Judy Fuhrmann; and
treasurer, Ethel Leifeste. The dance at the gym was well attended.
The district meeting of Rebekah Lodges was held at the hall here on April
18, with a supper at Vacha's before the meeting. Seventy
members from Ashland, Bayfield, Superior and Iron River were in
attendance at the meeting conducted by District President Violet Wilson of
the Iron River Lodge.
Service notes: Marine PFC Daniel Knapp, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Vern Knapp, departed Camp Pendleton, Calif., aboard the USS
Mitchell, bound for a 14-month tour of duty on Okinawa. Robert
Townsend, fireman apprentice, U.S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Townsend, graduated from Electrician's Mate School at the Naval
Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. George W. Goetsch, aviation
electronics technician, U.S. Navy, is serving with Heavy Attack
Squadron 6 aboard the aircraft carrier Ranger, operating in the Western
Pacific. George's parents are Mr. and Mrs. George A. Goetsch.
Births: Mr. and Mrs. Jack Goneau of Thousand Oaks, Calif.,
announce the birth of a daughter April 9. She has been named Theresa
Renee.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Granstrom of Mellen are the proud parents of a baby boy
born at Trinity Hospital at Ashland April 11th. Geri Jon is the name chosen
for him. The Granstroms have two other children, Julie Ann, and Michael
Dale. Mrs. Granstrom is the former Helen Holly.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Pierce (Myrtle) and Mr. and Mrs. William Falk of
Milwaukee and Oak Creek attended the Alumni Banquet and visited over the
weekend. They were guests of the Clarence Shukstad
(Shulstad?) home over Easter.
Mr. and Mrs. Andy (Phoebe) Mattila and family spent Easter
Sunday at their cabin on Mollenhoff Lake and stopped at the Talso
home for a visit before returning to Superior.
