Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River
PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the
Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield
COUNTY JOURNAL, successor� to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the
county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec.
3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the
web".
I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Iron River Memories

Mrs. Grace Wells has sold her residence on Bohn Street to Louis Pomish,
local merchant, and she, in turn, has purchased a little residence not yet
completed on the same street, erected by E.W. Johnson. She has not�� only
acquired the lots the buildings are on, but also the adjoining and next to
Pine Street from P.C. Knapp and intends to move the house onto the Knapp
lots next spring and finish the building at that time, and also add an
addition. (NOTE: Syntax� as written.)
Clarence Henkel, who has just returned from a trip to Chicago and
Milwaukee, reports that he is the daddy to a daughter born on Aug. 1st in
Chicago, and mother and child are doing fine.
The Farmers Co-op Mercantile Assn. of this city has a new manager in the
person of Frank Mehtala of Wentworth, who has succeeded Arnold Lassila, who
has been manager here for three years. The Northern Co-op store in northern
Oulu has also changed managers. Carl Lussika, who has been manager for the
past several years, has
resigned to accept a position in new York State, and Walter Frankie, of this
city, who has been employed by the Iron River Creamery and Cheese Factory,
has been named to succeed� him.
Northern Wisconsin experienced the greatest rainfall in a short period of
time in recorded history from Thursday to Saturday of last week: August 28,
29, 20. The rainfall in Iron River was 6.94 inches, at Ino, 12 miles east,
it was 9 inches, and Hayward over 15
inches and at Mellen over 15 inches. A� 15 foot section of the Orienta dam
went out; the bridge, known as Long Bridge on Highways 2 and 13 on
Chequamegon Bay went out, as did the Omaha railway bridge near Ashland
Junction. A large crew of men saved a large section of new pavement near Ino
through heroic efforts. The City of Hayward suffered extensive damage
including gullies 6 feet deep in their streets. The dam of the Lake Superior
District Power Company on the Bad River went out and when the flood waters
hit Odanah, it drove the inhabitants out of their� homes into the hills, and
the highway
was completely submerged with several feet of water rolling over it. When
the Smith Lake Dam went out near Hayward, it caused 35 bridges to be washed
out.
The Iron River Public schools reopened with three new teachers to succeed
Myron Harbour, science teacher, Florence Bracket and Phyllis Claus. The
successors are Norman Shulstad, Mrs. Helen Pierce and Mrs. Rade. Miss
Phyllis Claus, whose regrettable auto accident has caused her to be
incapacitated for an indefinite time, is
improving slowing. The other teachers under Supervising Principal L.H.
Merrihew are Miss Virginia Tarter, Miss T. Ethel Kaye Elliott, Miss Alice
Johnson, Miss Myrtle Coats, Miss Vivian Williams and Miss Helen Buran.
Sept. 11, 1941
The marriage of Mr. August Goetsch of Oulu and Miss Susan Polkoski of Tripp
was solemnized at Carlton, Minn., on Sept. 4, and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil
Sorenson of Orienta acted as the attendants and official witnesses. The
newlyweds announce that a wedding dance will be given at the Port Wing Town
Hall on Sept. 17, and everyone is
welcome.
In a pretty church wedding Sept. 8, at the Congregational Church before a
large audience, Mr. Albert Leonard Blomgren of Port Wing and Miss Iline
Andrea Hanson of this city were joined together in wedlock by Rev. Robert F.
Black, Pastor.

Brule Presbyterian Church, Sept. 6, 1959, at 3:30 p.m. A Coolidge Memorial
pew with bronze plaque will be dedicated in commemoration of the visit of
former President Calvin Collidge, wife, Grace, and son, John, who worshipped
in Brule church during the
summer of 1928. A brass memorial cross, in memory of Mrs. Jesse Blackmore,
will also be dedicated as will the new dining room and kitchen. The Brule
Ladies Aid will serve a luncheon following the dedicatory service to which
all members and friends of Brule
church are cordially invited.
Guests of Mrs. Betty Hoving have been Mr. and Mrs. Louis Dolezal and son,
Charles, of Chicago. Mrs. Dolezal is the former Lillian Chramosta. Another
sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. William Pollari, and two grandchildren of
Keewatin, Minn. (Rose Chramosta) were also visitors.
Mrs. Joseph Sajdak Jr. was guest of honor at a bridal shower Tuesday
evening at the REA building. Hostesses were Gertrude Farry, Roberta DeNagel
and Peggy Lavin. Games were played and winners were: Gladys TaBelle, Leila
Hoefling, Margie Sajdak, Nancy McLean and Katherine Aho.
A2C Ray Townsend, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Townsend, has signed for a six
year hitch in the Air Force. At present he is stationed at Finland, Minn.
Mrs. and Mrs. Matt Berkovich and daughter left today for their home in
Seattle after visiting relatives here and in Superior. Mrs. Berkovich is the
former Louise Gidlof, daughter of Mrs. Bertha Armbruster. A belated birthday
party was held for Mrs. Armbruster Sunday with a family get together.
A daughter was born Aug. 26th to Mr. and Mrs. Arne Laakso of Iron River.
They� have three other children, Gary, 6; Kathleen, 4; and Glenn, 3.
Mr. and Mrs. William F. Kraft of Minneapolis announce the engagement of
their daughter, Barbara Lucile, to Mr. Richard Pudas, son of Mrs. Eli Pudas
and the late Eli Pudas of Oulu. Both attended Wisconsin State College at
River� Falls where Mr. Pudas was a recent graduate.
