Bayfield County Journal Memories Column

Zoe von Ende Lappin, granddaughter of P.J. Savage, editor of the Iron River PIONEER from 1898 to 1952, has obtained permission for us to post the Memories and Yesteryear columns that are printed weekly in the Bayfield COUNTY JOURNAL, successor to the PIONEER and other newspapers in the county. The COUNTY JOURNAL announced the upcoming Web postings in its Dec. 3O, 1999, edition with the headline, "Genealogy columns to appear on the web".

I would like to thank Eric Sharp, Editor of the Bayfield County Journal for his willingness to work with us in our genealogical search. We look forward to the wonderful articles that will appear here. Thank you also to Zoe von Ende Lappin for all her work and the hours of typing.

Frank Mehtala, manger of the Oulu Co-operative Mercantile Association store in this city, announces that he has on hand a number of blank applications for citizenship papers, and that he will be glad to assist those non-citizens who desire to make application if they will come to the store and indicate their desire. Among the requirements which an applicant for citizenship must fulfill is that he or she shall supply two small photographs of themselves taken within 30 days, to be sent in with their application, and the required government initial fee of $2.50

Get ready to push the hands of your clock ahead one hour on Feb. 9th. Since the law is that it must remain that way until six months after the present world's war is concluded, many folks would like to know right now when that will be!

George W. Mitchell, local rural mail carrier, has been authorized by the Postal Department to sell Defense Savings Stamps; so the rural patron may purchase them from him if so desired.

The welcome sign is off of Wisconsin's 125 forest towers for the duration of the war. People have always been allowed to climb towers freely, but will not be permitted to do so the coming summer.

The towers are expected to be an important part of the defense program being set up. Maps that have been distributed freely in the past will not be available this year.

L.A. Mineau, chairman of the American Red Cross War Fund Drive, reports that the Town of Tripp is the first town to report that their work is completed and that the amount raised was $76. 25 --or an amount well over the town quota. Congratulations, Town of Tripp.

John Shykes of the Town of Tripp, a member of the Bayfield County Fair Committee, was commissioned to engage the entertainment for the County Fair. The Badger Entertainment Company will bring their carnival with several free acts. Since County Agent Roy Holvenstot was otherwise engaged, the matter of the bookings was left to Mr. Shykes' judgment.

The groundhog saw his shadow Tuesday! Extremes for the last week were 28 below zero to 35 above zero. Wednesday as we go to press the sun shines brightly, the smoke from the chimneys goes straight up and the temperature is 31 degrees above.

Little Kim Kesler had his 5th birthday Feb. 5th.

Otto Swenson, accompanied by his son, Swen, Misses Evelyn Nelson and Florence Dahl left Sunday morning at an early hour to motor to Chicago, and they hope to reach that city that day if no accidents occur to delay them. (Editor's note -- Mrs. Florence Buran, nee Dahl, said they were in the ditch on the way down and she has the pictures to prove it.) This item was from Feb. 6, 1930.
