JOHN MONTAGUE, hotel, Ashland, was born in Wellington, Canada, Nov. 14, 1838. He went to Negaunee, Mich., in 1864, and began mining for iron. In 1881 he came to Ashland and is now engaged as foreman in the mines of the Black River Company. In July of the same year he opened the Lindell House. In 1859 he was married to Johanna O'Donnell, formerly from Ireland. They have nine living children—Ellen (now Mrs. Moore), Mary, Sarah J., John, Johanna, Margaret, Catherine, Jeremiah and Elizabeth. One, Michael, is not living.
