Name: Wisconsin
Derived From: Marquette [Jacques Marquette, who explored the area with Louis Jolliet] was a fine mapmaker; and he drew maps of their journey. All of the explorers wrote down the many things they learned. They wrote down the names they heard. One Indian word they heard was miskousing. This later became known as Wisconsin.
Nickname: The Badger State
Motto: "Forward"
Discovered by Europeans: Earliest documented is 1634.
Organized as Territory: July 4, 1836
Entered Union: May 29, 1848 (the 30th state)
