Mayenne, France

Mayenne was one of the original 83 Departments created during the French Revolution on Mar 4, 1790. It was created form the former province of Maine.

Mayenne is part of the current region of Pays de la Loire, on the River Mayenne. The Mayenne River bisects the area from North to South. It is surrounded by the Departments of Manche, Orne, Sarthe, Maine-et-Loire, and Ille-et-Vilaine. Department 53.

It has an area of 5,171 sq km or 1,997 sq miand a population of 285,300 (est 1999).

The administrative centre is Laval, and other principal towns are Mayenne and Chteau-Gontier.

The inhabitants of the Department of Mayenne are called Mayennais.
