Colby's Store, White Creek, Closed After 3 Generations |
![]() |
Colby's Store in White Creek closed a couple of weeks ago after being in operation by three generations of Colbys.
The original store was in Easton, first owned by T P Colby. Then by a son, Charles Leonard Colby. It was while Charles managed the store that it burned on July 25, 1934, also completely destroying all of their possessions as they lived in the same building.
After the fire they moved to White Creek and had the store in a room of their home until the present store building was completed in October 1934.
Mr and Mrs C Leonard Colby had two daughters, Ruth and Louisa, and a son, Harold. The daughters helped their parents operate the store and Harold left home to spend several years in service in World War II and also was employed by the DuPont Company in Milwaukee. He returned to his home community about 10 years ago to help his sister, Louisa, in the store, as his sister, Ruth, married and moved to Lake Mason.
Their mother passed away in 1940 and the father, Charles Leonard, passed away in August 1962 at the age of 94.
