O. C. Johnson

C., county auditor - Decorah (IA) - born 10 Jan., 1841, in Stod, Trondhjem stift, Norway. He received a common school education in his native land; came with his parents to this country at the age of nine, settling in Racine county, Wis., where they remained for four years; then moved to Winneshiek county, Iowa, being among the earliest Norwegian settlers there. Johnson worked on his father's farm until twenty-one years of age; farmed for himself for a couple of years; settled in Decorah in 1864, where he clerked for several years, and in company with others built a woolen mill. He has also kept a general store for about ten years, was deputy auditor for seven years, and was elected auditor of Winneshiek county in 1892, and re-elected in 1894 and 1896. Johnson is a member of the Norwegian Synod, having been treasurer of his home congregation. At the age of twenty-one, he was married to Anna Hanson, of Spring Grove, Minn. They have one child. |
